Sohc Turbo Questions
I am in the process of building my D16Y8 Engine with SRP 9.1:1 pistons, Eagle Rods, ARP HeadStuds and a Block Guards, all bearings/gaskets ect will be replaced, head is getting machined/sandblasted/new sleas ect. And i am looking to run around 10 PSI with the Apex'i Turbo kit. Does anyone have any opinions on that turbo kit or its components, and is the apex;i BOV loud or quiet?
I don't know if you really need a block guard, you would need to machine the block afterwards. What fuel management are you useing? The apexi kit is a great kit for D series.
The company that makes the block guard says theres requires no machining. So hopefully i won't need to, but i still wanna use it for safety. for fuel to start with i was gunna get a VAFC for tuning and a walbro 255 fuel pump. I was gunna leave it at that till i got it dynoed and see what they said. If i need more fuel stuff or not. Any body have any opinions on fuel management???
Are you going to be using 440cc or 450cc injectors with that? If not you'll want an inline fuel pump and an FPR with your VAFC. Also, I would raise the compression up to atleast stock.
What I did is used LS rods and JE pistons for cost effectiveness. I figure the sleeves are the weak link on my motor. I'm using a block guard also.

no injectors, intank fuel pump, prolly a FPR with my vafc, and my pistons are on;y 9.1:1, stock os like 9.6:1. Hey also does anyone on here know where i can find pics of the Apex'i Kit on a car?? OR does anyone have it and would like to reveal Dyno figures and QM times!

From what I recall, an inline fuel pump is almost a necessity in set-ups like this; I could be wrong however. Look at www.homemadeturbo.com to get an idea of fuel set-ups until someone else comments.
check out site for more pics if you want...no dyno or qtr mile times yet..but from running with other cars that have run a qtr mile...i'm thinkin mid to low 14's with just 5lbs of boost.
you are not low 14's on 5 psi! Maybe low 15 to high 14's.
If you are going to do all the motor buildng might as well run more boost. Save your self money, get a smc and larger injectors or vafc hack will do the same only more$. Then you don't need fuel pump or fpr

you better get your fuel setup worked out before you starting the motor.
The traditional VAFC setup is the VAFC, a FMU, and a fuel pump. at least do that, or your nice setup will go bye-bye. I'll be running the hack setup with my GReddy SOHC kit and also be getting dyno tuned. Might look into the hack setup if you haven't already. or if you have the money to build up your motor, why not just go with an aem ems or something?

If you are only going to run 10psi then you should just leave the motor stock. With the money saved from not building it, buy Hondata, EMS, or whatever and intank fuel pump and a set of 440cc injectors.....get it TUNED and you motor will last a decent time and you will be happy w/ the results.
Stay away from AFC hacks and FMU's, they are only bandaid solutions.
The APexi kit is good but you have to rember it still has an internal wastegate and the turbo starts to become ineffiect around 18psi...take that into considoration if you plan on building the block in the long run.

Please don't take it the wrong way... I'm not knocking you... I've just seen what the Apexi kit can do on less boost then the competition. IHI turbos RULE!!!
Peace!
BTW, anyone thinking of getting this kit... GET IT! You'll be very happy with it.
Have you ever seen the difference between let's say a Greddy kit and the Apexi kit in terms of power vs psi? The Apexi turbo kit makes 186 to the wheels on 6 psi w/intercooler which drops intake charge to 5 psi because of restriction. Find me a Greddy kit that can do that on same psi or for that matter any other turbo kit made for the SOHC engines. BTW, this was also done with the kit alone and not any additional hardware or electronics that's not included in the kit.

there is no way he is pulling LOW 14's w/ ony 6psi...my friend runs the APEX'I kit and his best time was a 13.4 at 16 psi w/ the aid of z10 bars....

with an intercooler, doesnt that change things drastically? If you had an apex kit vs a greddy kit w/intercooler....wouldnt it be a closer match?'
The apex does have a better turbo, but it still small and comparable to the 15g IMO

i have the kit and this the dopest sohc turbo there is right now.. only one i can see challenging it would be the edelbrock kit. i running 12psi right now and i know im well over 220whp. the turbos might be comparable in size but the apexi ihi turbo is a ballbearing
. heres my setup
apexi turbo kit
apexi gt intercooler
apexi twin chamber blowoff valve
apexi fuel setup (vortech fmu, missing link, holly 266 intank fuel pump)
apexi VAFC
apexi meter (press, temp, boost, and egt)
apexi N1 exhaust
as far as motor mods go
d16y8 block sleeved (golden eagle)
srp pistons
eagle rods
arp studs
d16y8 head stock
d16y8 intake mani ported to a bseries TB
quaife LSD
clutch and flywheel
getting everything tuned shortly and power fc will be coming as well.
tell me what you guys think and how much i should be able to get. 12psi daily and 15 psi track.

you're my role model an hero
thanks leadtrum! you have the same turbo setup.... just not the block! do a conversion to 5spd and youll enjoy it more. its not that hard to either. my dx hatch used to be auto. power fc should be here by the end of the week and its gonna get tuned with rc550 injectors! long term plan (1month from now) is to change the downpipe and and get a custom egual length manifold. I LOVE THE SOHC POWER!!! i went from a full blown 2.0 poorman ITR to this and i love way MORE!
i really want to stay away from the hacks and FMU's so im looking at maybe getting a Hondata. But i really want to take a few dyno runs to determine what i will really need for fuel. I don't want a bunch of stuff that isn;t necessary. And im building the engine for safety purposes. I want to be able to run 12-15 psi at the track but 10psi daily. Thanks for all the feed back! keap it coming please. Oh one last question. What about BOV, what are everyones favorites and what do people think of the twin chamber. I want something noticable, but not LOUD like the RFL.
