Default Cover me, I'm going in (Tech Questions)

Since I live in an apartment right now I can't really do any work on my car so I have
to binge every time I go to my parents house. Well, next week that's where I'll be
and I need some help with some of the stuff on my list.

1. I'm told by a dude at Mr. Lube (like I said, I can't do my own work) that I have a
torn "passenger outer axle boot". I asked him if he meant a CV boot and he said
no... so what does he mean...axle seal? Is it one of these?

The top one says RH and the bottom LH, so are these the same thing just for different sides?

2. He also said I had a rear seal leak. Again, don't really know what that is.

Thanks for you help.

Also, if someone has a pdf file of the section for this in a helms manual, that would be cool. I'm going to order one but it won't be here in time... guess I should have thought of that a month ago.

The he did say boot only thing I can think of is the CV boot, maybe the inside side of it is torn. The axle seal is inside the tranny you can see it only if you take out the axle. Also the cv boot would lean axle grease which probably wouldn't leak on the ground but spray on the wheel wheal and the axle seal would cause you to leak red transmission fluid.

just to clarify
unless you have an automatic, your transmission fluid will be oil colored. (honda MTF has a distinct smell. and if your not using MTF your using 10w30 normal oil)

thanks, for the reply...I haven't been under the car in a while so I don't know where the leak is. I suppose it's possible that he saw transmission fluid around where the axle enters the diff case and daignosed the problem based on that. He did specifically say it wasn't the CV boot. But I agree, "outer boot" does sound like a CV boot to me. I guess I'm going to have to crawl under there and see what's up.

Can anyone offer some guidance on #2?

PS- I've decided to replace the boot and the axle seal.... it's reading break, I've got nothing better to do.

Most people would say the rear main seal is the one at the flywheel/clutch end of the crankshaft. If the oil is coming out from the bell housing/engine interface it is most likely the rear main seal.

Would that be engine oil then, or tranny oil? How serious would that problem be? Would it be a problem to wait until I change the clutch (probably about a year or so)?
