Default My SMC review

Let me preface this by saying that this is not a personal attack agianst Zip who I know is a member of this board. This is just a non-biased review and it's only intended to inform other honda-tech members.

It might work for other set ups but mine didn't like it. Here's what I experienced.

I've got the ball bearing IHI turbo that comes with the Apexi kit for the SOHC on my B18B1. It spools very quickly and reaches 10psi at a little before 3k rpm. I was running 450 DSM injectors with 255lph pump. I went to a dyno so I could dial in my a/f for 10psi. Well, the SMC has only one dial for the 1.5k - 4k rpm range. This made my 2.5k area stinking rich while I could only achieve a 13.5:1 a/f at 4k rpm with the dial all the way rich. Under cruise and low boost my car would fall on it's face when it hit 4k but if I floored it and spooled the turbo it was OK to drive. Basically, driveability sucked and I went back to my stock 240 injectors and the Greddy blue box. Now I can only boost to 6psi but the driveability is excellent. I'm saving for a Hondata.

This is fair warning. I guess if you had a lazy fat turbo which the honda-tech crowd has a fetish for it might be ok if you didn't reach full boost by 4k. Also if there were more increments of adjustment per rpm it might work better.

Your reply makes no sense whatsoever.

Hi Glagola, thanks for the input. The SMC was originally based on a GSR with a DRAGIII turbo setup at 7-8psi of boost. I have already taken your review of the SMC into consideration. The new SMC+ will have adjustable points at 1K intervals from idle to 8000rpm with the same packaging and layout. The SMC+ will be released in about two weeks. For your beneficial input, I will modify your current SMC to the SMC+ free of charge.

Happy Holidays

Zip, thanks for taking this as it was meant to be taken. I appreciate your offer to upgrade my SMC. Unfortunately my SMC is all but sold. (check the classifieds)

I think I would need something like a Hondata to be able to dial in the 3k rpm range to work with 10psi and 20in of vacum. I am guessing here but is this beyond the capability of the SMC? I think with 450s I would need to turn the dial all the way rich to satisfy the need for fuel in the 3k range @ 10psi and this would leave me with rich conditions so bad my car would stall under cruise. This is probably the case with a SAFC too. Am I wrong?

Hi ZIP:

So can I get mine "Modified" or Exchaged if I return it to you ??? for "FREE" ???

I have not yet installed it it was personally delivered to me couple weeks ago by "2K_TEG".

FYI: I will be running a MaxRev kit T3/T04 Turbo RC-440cc injectors on stock internals up to 10psi ... and I would hate to "experience" what glagola1 has gonne through allready.

E-mail me (vrflyer@columbus.rr.com) if you'd like with details also if you can.... Thanks.

I just thought of modifying the SMC to the new SMC+ platform a day ago when glagola posted his results and feedback. When the SMC+ is formally introduced the current SMCs can be modified for a nominal fee. The SMC+ as a result will have an increased price due to this new feature being implemented.

I think the limit for the afc hack is around 11psi. If you're running a turbo that doesnt spool til 4k @11psi, you need a

edit: why the inline pump?

he is trying to imply that if you have a large turbo, 11psi will most likely not be in turbo effeicent range.
