SOLOII Tire recommendations
I'm looking to get a good set of tires for SCCA SOLOII autocrossing. I'm on Michelin XGT V4 195/55/15 on 2000 GSR rims now. (CRAPPY TIRE) I'm looking at Pirelli, Yokohama, Dunlop, etc....& what about going to 205/50/R15's on the GSR rims? What are the pros & cons?
hans down the Falken Azenis is without a doubt the best autox tire around. buy them from tires.com and they're $72.00 for 205/50R-15 with no tax and free shipping via FedEx 2 day service. i used to run Bridgestone S03 tires but now they are a complete waste of money thanks to the Azenis that grips equally to the S03 in dry weather for half the price. i now use Azenis for autox and track days. i even used them for a rainy messy day at Buttonwillow a few weeks ago and they provided great traction with predictable but not early loss of grip when pushed past their limit. you wont be disappointed.
Not that it should matter to you or anyone else but 34 of the 50 cars driven at the recent 2002 Solo 2 nationals were on Falken Azenis. 8 of the top 10 cars were also on Azenis and did I mention that the national STS champ, Chris Shenefield, also drove on Falken Azenis.

I mean if your looking for a proven, tested and winning tire you might want to check out the Falken Azenis.

What do you want the tire to do? Competition only, summer only, all season, if all season how much cold or snow/ice do you get?
I currently have 712's for summer only. I like them for street but not so much for comptetition. Next summer I will have a set of Azenia. This winter I am trying out a set of Falken 512's.
I probably wont be able to give away my XGT V4's.
All Depends
If u run STS, go with Falken.
If u run on other class say SP, Falken is far from competitive. Either Kumho or Hoosier will be the only choice.
Down here in Vancouver, BC. 98% of all the serious regional driver use Kumho because our field eat tire like crazy. Hoosier will not last even half a season down here.

Trending Topics
In rain, 712 will be a better choice, but thats only apply to certain driving condition like high way speed. But all in all, i will still recommand Azenis for daily drive. The outstanding traction & built it provide will out-perform 712 in every single way. (Beside the speed to channel water out)
But i don't really understand why people care so much about wet performance.
In fact, I will never do hard cornering in wet. I never have problem with my yoko 032R (even worse than Azeins, only 2 huge trend to channel water out) in wet. Indeed, it even out perform all other summer tire i ever ride on (Azenis, AVS-I, RE-71, A509, A520, SP 8000, SP 9000 etc.) in wet when talking about stopping teaction.

205/55/16 $78 from vulcantire.com
I believe they're the cheapest price anywhere for all azenis sizes and really fast shipping. I plan on getting another set after I'm done autoxing the hell out of my current ones..

I run SO-3's in 195/50 and they are only $350 shipped. Awesome dry and unbeatable wet weather traction (just ask the WRX guys I run against in STX
)

I have personally autocrossed on the Michelin XGT V4, Kumho 712, and Falken Azenis and the Falkens are the best of the bunch by far. Obviously some r-compound tires are going to be better then all three but if you're new to autocrossing I recommend learning on street tires.
Well, you did not mention what class you are going to run in. If it is going to be in a Stock or any Prepared class an R-compound tire is a must. I've used Kumho's for many years with great success. As for a ST tire go with the Falken Azenis.
Thanks
I love my Azenis'!
They suck in snow though
Should of never backed my car out of the garage (storage) to work on another one. Took me about 20 minutes of shoveling, spreading road salt and about 15 attempts at running up the driveway to make it to the top. That's with a Kaaz LSD too. haha

Hello happycorepuppy,
You wrote; "This is completely untrue. The best autox tire around is the Hoosier A3S03"
I suggest you try a Hoosier 43375, 43385 or Goodyear 807-889-068, 807-409-104 if you are using 15" tires. You will knock min 2.0 seconds off your time on A3S03 on a 60 second run.

While this thread is alive, and about the Azenis and SOLOII, I'll go ahead and ask a question I have.
Are the Falkens legal in stock class?
