GSR's with i/h/e: Can you hear your vtec engagement point switchover at 4400?
I recently realized that what i thought was my exhaust, could in fact be my vtec engagement point at 4400....i frequently hold part throttle up to that range (4500rpm) and then let the car slow from there....I always hear this raspy sort of backlash in a way (hard to describe) when i am decelerating and i pass that certain rpm....there is additional resonance at 4k, but i think that is just the exhaust...anyway, let me know if you hear the same thing....i'm been wondering what it is...
sorry this sounds ambiguous, my car is just making all these strange noises as of late

Your the first person i have ever heard saying they dont like the sound of their vtec, and you do have a choice, sell your car and buy a non vtec one and leave the i/h/e alone

ANYWAY, I noticed the vtec engagement point (in an audible sense) 100000 times more clearly after I threw on an injen short ram. After that, I put on a greddy evo and dc jdm 4 to 1. The sound was clearly the loudest with just the short ram on.

When i had the short ram on, i did not hear the vtec engagement @4400, it only started screaming @5800. However, when i installed the comptech icebox i heard vtec engagement loud and clear @4400.
Lets be clear...this is under PARTIAL throttle....and i am NOT talking about the secondary wail that occurs around 5500. That sounds great, especially with a short ram...this is just partial throttle instances where i allows the rpms to run freely up to about 4500, then i let off the gas (and coast/decelereate whatever)....around 4000-4400 i get a resonance, buzziness and the exhaust pitch changes....THIS is what i am talking about.....I am not saying I don't like vtec, or the way it sounds or whatever....give me a break. I've had my car since 1995. Probably longer than most others on this board. If i didn't like it I would have sold the car a long long time ago.......
Every car does that when you let off the throttle at higher rpms.
Its got nothing to do this vtec disengaugment. Try only going to 4k it will do the same thing.
Buzzing noise? My exhaust sounds good when I let off the throttle. What exhaust you got?

Ride in my car and you will hate the sound of VTEC as you have blood draining out of your ears. I find the loud, obnoxcious, high-pitched sound putrid until it hits about 8000RPMs.

The VTEC engagement in an R is considerably louder than that of a GSR. I do admit, I used to drive around and hit VTEC just to hear that sound.

yup, same here. i could hear my vtec x-over with my CAI, but now i switched it to a short ram for the winter and now i can't hear it at all.
itys called dual stage intake manifold
anyway, so in a comptech ICEBOX...you can hear the vtec xover? in side a box?
maybe I'm just a weirdo (yep, I am), but I could hear mine when my car was stock. Now, I have an axle-back (till I can afford the rest of the piping), and I hear it even better. This past weekend, I did something really dumb too. Me and a friend of mine took off my hood, took off the filter, and bent the hose up into the airstream a little bit. I had a little filtration by means of a piece of cheesecloth folded over three times and zip-tied into place, as was the hose. VTEC was loud, but when the secondaries opened, it sounded like a whole 'nother engine was running. I know it's dumb to run without a filter, but it was only for about 5 minutes, so there was no damage done. I think that might be my 1/8 mile track setup from now on, unless someone sees a reason that it would hurt the car in that short amount of time.

Yes, I could hear it. Best to hear it at partial steady throttle and wait for it, although under partial(slow throttle) it will switch over at approx 5000rpms, under heavy throttle/acceleration it will come on at 4400rpms. Damn I miss my teg, later
