Which final drive should I use? 4.78 or 4.92?
I have the ATS final drive and wouldn't have it any other way. Trust me get the ATS you'll be happy. Also to BREAK a final drive you gotta be doing some STUPID stuff
I like my 4.929. ANd the guy that broke his ATS also broke the STOCK 4.40 so even OEM can break with the right driver.
I think the person you guys are talking about is TOM(B18C5-EH2)... I know he's had problems with both of his FD's. I cant remember how he broke them, but Im sure you can IM him and find out for sure.
What do you use your car for? If 4.9 is too high for you. Let say on a particular road course or street driving. Increase the wheel size to lower it down.

there is No substitute!
Search some more and you'll see that an overwhelming number of people that have this mod are extremely pleased. The one that I know of that was Not pleased and has already been mentioned is an anomaly, just as Tuan had some serious issues with the Toda B's. The ATS FD is hardened for race applications and more sturdy then the Stock FD as per ATS and Yasu.
It was one of the single most noticeable mods that I've done and it was pure plug-N-play, no tuning required and the atmosphere doesn't directly affect it as is the motor by the weather and heat and humidity.
Good stuff and Yasu is a great guy but, you can get it from any number of other dealers now.

And I'm very happy with the JDM 4.78...love it, have some traction problems here and there, don't think that the 4.92 would have been what I wanted, and cruising at 80 mph is ~4600rpm.

I've driven both, and the ATS wins hands down. Maybe not for a drag car with boost since lower gears wouldnt build boost, but...

yeah like everyone said, the ATS, spoon, KAAZ all use the JDM counter shaft and shims, 1st counter gear, etc. They change the ring gear to make it the ratio you want so 69 teeth for 4.9 and 67 teeth for 4.7, etc... very tough units, there will always be a breakage, but that shouldnt be used as a criteria for you not buying it as it can happen to anyone.
I personally have done countless ones, had one 1 break because it was a 19 yr old at the street races who decides to do a 2nd gear burnout with 150K miles control arm bushings and had severe wheel hop broke his diff and clean all the teeth off the countershaft. He didn;t realize I was there watching him at the street races, he decided to come back to me the next day to tell me somethign was wrong with his tranny ... meanwhile he wanted to do a 2nd gear burnout for show LOL

TTT for DANIEL HELMS... Why listen to the draggers? LOL
I fail to see how BETTER ACCELERATION doesn't make a difference - whether in a straight line or at autox!
-the r0cker, who is a 4.9 proponent and will keep it in with BOOST...

MKS auto 5.11
LOL, 5.11? I need that in my GSR tranny, that should come out to comapre to a 4.9 in an ITR tranny..... *searches web for a MKS auto 5.11
Right now at autocrosses with Kumho Victoracers I'm spinning the tires in corners, and the straights if I'm not properly modulating the throttle...

Good lord, how much power are you making? I don't have that problem on street tires at an auto-x and making 180 whp and 126 tq. And I typically place top 3 so I am not driving it easy.
