HELP ME PLEASE!!! My car is over heating
I just bought my 94 accord today, and it is overheating like crazy.
i notice that the fan comes on only after i turn OFF the car, and the switch moves to the ACC or OFF position. it does not come one when the car is started, or when it is turned to the ON position. I think this is the reason for the overheating. How can i fix this problem?
i hope that it is a fuse or something that is blown. When i turn off the car, the fan runs for like 1/2 hour or so until it cools down. What control when the fan turns on and off? Where can i find the fan fuse to check it? i am new to the accord, so i am not sure of where everythign is as yet.
could it be that my radiator needs flushing or something? what other possible reasons could have caused this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help
I also want to know how can i join this club to become a member?

i have found that the fan DOES come on when the car is started, but it just continues and overheat to hot and stays hot. i need help asap.
just get a new thermostat and replace the old one.
it's like 30 buck a piece from autozone.
I have it done by a shop after tranny rebuild for my old legend
around 40buck, 15-20 min.

You could also have a blown head gasket. That's what happened to my grand-ma's civic.
But yeah. check the sensors, make sure the fans turn on the appropriate times. also the fans should both turn on when you switch the AC on.`

I do not feel the temp in the upper radiator hose getting hot when i start the car, and when the car reaches normal operating temp, the rev starts to jump from 3000 to 1000, so i was figuring that the termostat might be stuck closed. is my assumption correct?
THermostat is first culprit. Let car warm up then upper radiator hose should get hot. If not replace it. You can also test it by putting it in boiling water and seeing if it opens. This is very easy to replace yourself. Just a couple bolts.
Step one, check for coolant. Step two, check upper radiator hose at proper operating temperature. Step three, don't overheat it too much (head gaskets do not like overheat conditions). Good luck.
I had the same problem, I just fixed it a week ago, it was the thermostat. $113 dealership... it hurt
AHAHAHAHAH you got robbed!
DO NOT do what he did.. to replace the thermostat please come back to us for help. This is literally a 15.00 fix (and thats on the highside).
god i should open a shop.
if you DO decide to do it, be very careful how you handle the coolant hoses. If they're old, I garuntee torquing them trying to get them off will cause leaks. Also, for the love of god, DON'T LEAN ON THE TOP OF YOUR RADIATOR WHEN YOU WORK IN THE ENGINE BAY. It will make a marginal radiator LEAK FOR SURE.
Ok, i have just flushed my radiator and replaced my termostat. $16.00 for termostat at pep boys. they gave me a 180F termostat, but the book said to use a 194F termsotat, is that OK?
so far, ideling, my car seem to be OK, but i notice steam comming from the radiator area, i was wondering if that is due to spillage of the coolant?
What i am most concerened about though is that the upper radiator hose swells. i do not think that it is the proper hose for it, because i can see that that hose is a bit larger, and the clamps are not original. i was wondering if the swelling is normal? i was fearing that it would burst. when cold, the hose also feels a but softish compared to the lower radiator hose and compared to the on on my friend's civic. i would like to replace this hose though. can i get it from pepboys or do i need to get it from the dealer?

I would goto the dealer for the hose, sure you might pay a couple extra bucks but you know its molded right for your car.
180oF is fine for the thermostat.. especially since you live down south she'll run a lil cooler. If you lived up in Canada (especially coming into winter) I probobly would have suggested sticking with 195oF.
Well drive the car around (keep some water with ya
) and see if she doesnt stop steaming. Check the drain on the bottom of the radiator to make sure you got it all the way closed. If it wont stop look for leaky hoses or pinhole leaks in your raidtor. Also look at your radiator cap (make sure car is cool!) and see if its in need of replacment. The radiator cap plays a big role in the cooling of your vehicle.

another thing i forgot to mention this, but i am pissed off. why did they make the radiator bung with plastic? mine cross treaded and i am not sure if it is properly sealed. i tightened it, but i know that the bung needs replacing. can i get this at the dealer as well?

Ok, now i have another problem. my car is now reving high, at about 2000 RPM sometimes. any ideas as to what could cause that?
i also have anther problem. my spark plugs are wet with oil. what does this mean?
The car is also smoking white smoke. any ideas?

The top part (ceramic is wet with oil) means you need to either tighten the valve cover or get a new valve cover gasket set
the bottom of the plug is wet, then you have fouling issues to work with.
Chances are your FIV or something like that didn't agree with the radiator flush. Make sure to get all the air out of the system.
White smoke? alot?
uh..............
Get a block test kit before you do anything, and use it to check for a faulty head gasket. Otherwise, I'm suspecting that the overheating has burned the head gasket on the vehicle. This would be the best time to perform an H22 swap.

the treading in the spark plugs is soaked with oil, but there is oil around the top of the engine, so i guess i have a valve cover leak then? where can i get the block test kit?
can i change the valve cover gasket myself? or does it need to be done by a mechanic?
i was always concerene about doing this because i do not have a torque wrinch. it it vital to have a torque wrinch?
I am learning home mechanic, and i usually do most of the work on my car, or learn to do it.
I went to the honda dealership today and the guy was telling me that my radiator was changed, because honda radiators have a plastic top and mine is metal top. is this true?
My heater does not work. any ideas as to what is wrong?

You can change your valve cover gasket yourself.
It's very easy, Just get the gasket, Pull of the cover,
put in the new one the same way the old one came out.
I'd get new spark plug seals to.

yep white smoke. the white smoke was there before i bought the car though.
i have a major problem now. my car won't start. it is stuck in a parking lot. the engine just turns with the starter, but it seems like its not "catching". when i looked on the spark plugs, i realised that they are covered with oil. when i was driving out this morning, it noticed a bit of hesitation, and then when i stopped and tried to start it again it just would not start.
any one has any idea of what can i do? i really really need help
