Default JDM cluster question

Hey guys, i drive a 98 GSR and just bought a JDM ITR cluster. I believe the cluster is from a 2000 or 2001 because it has the little key icon and only had 16k KM. Well my friend and i installed it today and both the temp and fuel gauges wouldn't work. the temp stayed at C and the fuel gauge went from me having a 1/4 of a tank to having a full tank. Then we tested the cruise control since the light on that wouldn't go off either. once cruise was engaged the Maint Req light came on.

My question is, could it be messed up because of the different year or is it busted? The guy i bought it from says he has a 94 and says it worked fine.

If it's because of the year, is there anyone in So Cal who would help me by trying it out on their 00/01 ITR. Thanks ahead of time.

From you've said, the cluster you have is most likely off a 96spec JDM ITR, because a 98spec cluster would be a PnP.

To make it work, you can take all 4 gauge faces out from the jdm cluster and swap them with your stock ones. HTH

thats too much work and totally defeats the purpose of having the ITR gauges! Do what I did...I just carefully unscrewed the electonic film on the back and switched it with the oem ones...taking my time, it only took me 20 minutes from start to finish.

both methods work. how the **** does swapping the jdm cluster's gauges to the usdm cluster housing/motherboard defeat the purpose?

personally I'm wary of fuggen up the motherboard, so I swap the gauges. once the cluster is out it takes a solid 5 minutes with hand tools.. ouch sooo hard and soo much time.

I feel the same way.

Also it's much cheaper to fix/replace if you break a part while swapping the gauges, then if you ruin the film.

sorry my bad...I thought you meant swapping out the faces...as a lot of people have been known to suggest...the film is still a bit easier.

Thanks a million guys!!! I tried out switching the green circuit piece and now everything works perfect. My fuel went back down to where it should be, the temp gauge works and the cruise control light isn't stuck on.

Thanks again everyone for your help. Now i don't have to search for a new one and bother the guy i bought this cluster from about returning it (which he was willing to accept)

I too would like to know, mine seems dimmer. Also, the E/brake symbol is USDM. Did you swap the plastic film for the idiot lights?

hey comp97gsr I was doing archived searches on jdm clusters because I just swapped my jdm cluster gauges into my gsr gauge shell. I recall reading a thread you posted asking if anyone has swapped usdm odometer into a jdm. I completed that today. Its actually quite easy but time consuming. Follow these instructions https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=837111

The only part I had a difficult time with was pulling the needle off. I used 2 spoons and pryed them up from each side. I found out after doing a search. Prior to this I had worked on pulling the needle off with my fingers to no avail

yeah, that was an old thread. I ended up swapping the speedo and changed the gauge face to the jdm one. Worked great, but I ended up geting a USDM R cluster.

Oh and I junked the JDM cluster, it was in bad shape and swapped the needles on the USDM one.

Oh, and a needle puller is your friend. Definately won't break any needles using one.

to answer the brighter gauge question, you can buy Raybrig white bulbs for gauge clusters. The Spoon clusters come with them and they really make the panel look more vivid. I'm not sure how accessible they are in the States, but I'm sure that you can get them online somewhere.

Are the raybrig white blue coated or clear glass? It's pretty easy to get raybrig products here in the states.

Just take the film off the back, remember to be careful taking those bulbs out, and placing them in the right order. Next, put your O.E one on. I had the same issue when i ordered my spoon cluster. I have a 2001, and it had a 98 film on the back

What the hell are you rambling about? LOL

This thread is from October of 2002. I realized almost right after buying this cluster (way back then) that it wasn't "real" JDM. Fine by me since I got a good deal
