Who needs Mugen?
1 old license plate - free
4 little screws that were lying around - free
30 minutes spent removing the accelerator pedal - free
60 minutes spent cutting, bending, drilling and filing - free
20 frustrating minutes getting the pedal back in (that little spring is a bear) - free
60 or so intermittent minutes of head-scratching - free
A gas pedal that's wide enough for my foot to reach both the brake and gas at the same time - priceless!

Besides, I think it's illegal to drive barefoot in FL, so I would never do that.

Oh yeah, to keep it on topic, great idea with the DIY pedal

That seems like a lot of work since you could just learn to heel-toe and reach the pedal no problem.

[SARCASM]Gosh, I would never have thought of spending the last two months trying to figure out how to reach both pedals at the same time without lurching uncontrollably or bashing my knee against the steering column before resorting to metalwork. Nope, never occurred to me.[/SARCASM]

heel-toeing is not easy for everyone with stock pedals, specially when you're tall and your knee wants to hit the steering column while trying to contort your ankles... i can do it (not well) with certain shoes on. I bought some small/tight racing shoes but it just made it worse with the stock pedals because the sole of the shoe is so much more narrow. so now time for some new pedals...

Well, the "wide foot" technique was suggested to me by my first instructor, and it has proven to be the only technique I've tried so far that has really worked acceptably. If I position the seat so that I can reach the wheel comfortably, the pedals are too close for me to twist my foot into the classic heel-toe position without smacking my knee against the underside of the dash in the process. The problem I've been having with the wide foot technique is that the stock pedals are just barely close enough to reach both at once, so a lot of the time my foot will slip off one pedal or the other -- not a good thing to happen when diving into a hairpin. That extra 1/2 inch on the gas pedal is just enough to make all the difference.
My next HPDE is in two weeks and I plan to bug my instructor about it at that time, but until then, this has greatly reduced my frustration level.
Peace, out.

Time = Money
therefore it's not free at all, consider all how many hours u spend,
plus good luck with that when it's raining, no grip at all

Dude, that's a good idea, but at least get a piece of aluminum stock so that you've got something sturdier down there. If you could find a piece thick enough, have it cross hatched (or DIY) so you have some grip. That's looking hella ghetto, but whatever works, right?
