Default Harness Question: Snap-in vs Bolt-in

Is there a safety difference between the snap-in and bolt-in type belt mounts?

I'm looking to permanently mount harnesses in my car. The shoulder straps will be wrap-around. I cannot think of a reason to ever take them out, other than to permanently remove them. I'm looking at the ends though, and the snap-in just looks like it could offer greater installation options. Having never done this before, it's highly plausible that I just don't know what I'm talking about.

The price difference is negligible, so my only concern is if either of these would be considered less-safe.

Jeff, I have the snap in ones and they are great. I think that if they sell them like that then it should be ok. Also they will sit at the correct angle when you pull them or adjust your seat.

I replaced the OEM seat belt mounting bolts with the appropriate eye-bolts and snap my lap belt in, with the shoulder belts on harness bar of my rollbar. No problems so far. Also no drilling holes in the car.

I believe that some racing organizations ask you to put a cotter pin through the snap (a hole is provided) to lock it closed and make doubly sure that there is no chance of something unsnapping it.

For the most part, this is probably true, but we'll have someone believing that "Monkey Barz" are OK since they "sell them" so they must be safe.

I have the snap in lap belts, the bolt in sub strap, and the shoulder harnesses around the harness bar.

This is absolutely correct. Don't run without the cotter pins in.

Regardless of which you decide on, get big backing plates if your going through the body of the car...

Jeff,
Look to make sure they meet the latest FIA/SFI ratings. Their testing standards are amongst the highest in the safety industry. These go beyond personel opinions most people have.

Cheers

Snap-in ends allow some play for alignment changes (e.g., when belts are adjusted or seats moved). They are generally easist to work out and are certainly good if the proper eyebolts are used, and backed up if they are in drilled holes.

Those are 2" belts. You may want to reconsider and purchase 3" belts with a sub if you're spending time on track at speed.

$.02

(If you're just autocrossing, disregard that)
