Default What should EGT temperatures be at?

My temperatures reach as high as 1600 degrees. Is that safe. Also do I have it mounted in the right location, it is mounted on the exhaust flange in the whole for where the internal wastegate would be on the exhaust side of the turbo?

the probe should be in the manifold i believe.

1600 it's the end of the meter...
hehe seem a little high...

mine are at 1400 when cruizing

1450 /1500 max at WOT..

when the neddle reach 1600 it's because y have a probleme...missfire or hesitation or ect..

1600 is pretty high. I think my EGT temps are pretty high myself. I average around 600 degrees celsius(1100 fahrenheit) cruising and max 800 degrees celsius(1500 fahrenheit) at WOT.

Should I retard my timing some more? By turning the distributor. It is @ stock right now or around it, because it was advance before I put the kit on.

from what i understand, the egt shouldn't go above 850 or you could have some problems. My egt never got above 800 and that was doing around 130mph. Now i know if you running to rich it can cause your egt to have a high temp also. I've been told after 850 you start melting stuff, that is just what i've heard so if somebody can agree or correct me please do so.

Actually 1000 celsius you would want to get out a cup and start catching the liquid, but according to some on H-T they've tuned cars that high. My a/f is nice across the board, egt's have a few factors. Later Allen

retarding the timing will have an adverse affect of what you think, it'll increase EGT's. i would add a bit more fuel across the board instead, ala FPR

in my teg, I usually get around 600-700°C cruising, and anywhere as high as 850°C when under WOT (i do push a lot of boost though)

i believe running LEAN causes ur egt to increase.
You might want to look into why ur so high. whats the setup?

your right, if you run lean of course the egt will rise, but it will also rise if your pushing to much fuel. That's why alot of people argue it's not accurate enough and to go with a air/fuel gauge. My egt never ran high, 800 was the most and that was at 130mph, so i'd say my motor was doing pretty good. The setup was a sohc vtec with greddy turbo and greddy egt.

My egts wen I'm cruising on the freeway are around 1300 duing about 130km. during heavy busting never passed 1200. the egt probe is right after the turbo on the down pipe.
I use to have high egts befor tuning on the freeway because of runing to rich. A wide band is your friend don't be sheap and do some tuning

Are u talking about celsius since u have the greddy rgt. I have the autometer and it is farenheit. I took it out for a spin just now and it was @ 1500 f @ 10lbs on a t3 turbo.

I have been tuning the aem ems system for a while now. Retarding the timing will raise the EGT temperture. Advancing will likely lower the temperture. How A/F affect the EGT temperture is alittle complicated. Too much fuel will raise the temp. and too little fuel will also raise the temp. Supposely if you are tuning with EGT only, you should richen it and and then lean it out step by step. Watch the EGT temperture drop and start climbing again which then you richen it up a bit and you are done. But seriously, I would rather tune it with a Wideband unit. It's much more accurate and easier. The EGT tuning is old school way so becareful. Too many factors are involved in rising and lowing the EGT temperture. I wouldn't go over 900C as I have hit 820C all the times. Now I am at steady 740C WOT. I maybe be advanced too much but the motor react so well. I need to retard it back a few degrees.

BEFORE Afc hack:
I was running higher egt's, at WOT for more then like 4 seconds I would go above 800c, even hit 850+ once. Cruising on the highway was high 700's sometimes 800c. This is with stock injectors and 12:1 FMU and inline pump. 12deg timing AND stock timing temps were the same in both conditions.

AFTER Afc hack:
I never got hotter then 700c driving normal, cruising on the highway, or partially boosting. Even at full boost I never saw it get more then 720c, both with stock timing and my now retarted down to 12-13deg timing.

Make of this what you will.... but I think I was running dangerously lean on the FMU setup, whereas now I'm running really rich with 440's and afc...

...misinformation sucks...

1600F is probably just fine.

EGTs really are overrated as a means of tuning anything.

Peak EGT is at stoich. Going either direction rich/lean makes EGT drop.

Retarding ignition timing can increase EGT because the burn is started later and will not have released all heat energy to the piston/cooling system. Advancing ignition timing can have the opposite effect.

Ignition timing directly affects post-burn air/fuel ratio. So fooling with your timing will change your effective a/f ratio without changing the amount of fuel delivered. Everything affects everything else.

As far as I am concerned, EGT is only useful for a couple things:

1) mildly useful at tuning ignition timing
2) makes you feel better that you arent runing exhaust temps hot enough to melt your valves. This isn't necessarily helpful because maybe you are just displacing the heat somewhere else -- like the head/cooling system.

I try to run EGTs under 800C at WOT. I'm not sure why, it just seems like a good number.

Dustin

I hit 1600 a few times lately. Its only when I'm on the freeway, after I run out 3rd in full boost (7psi) and part way into 4th is when my egt's hit 1600. I can run out the 1-3 and I'd only be at 1500. BTW my probe is on the manifold, 1 inche away from the turbo.

that's weird, when I run excessivly rich, the temp. rises, but as I lean it out alot, it also rises the temp. Hum.. I was never at stoich at cruising anyway, not even close ( too rich ).
I do remember when I had stock ecu a year ago, temperture is at the highest during stoich while crusing and WOT was alittle lower. Maybe that explain the drop in temp. before and after stoich. Sorry if I confused anyone, every setup is different from car to car. Thanks dustin for the further explanation.

this is it, the last straw, i cannot look at this board anymore, its filled with such ignorance and the ignorance is then passed on to the guy who didnt know, and now thinks he knows, but is misinformed.
no disrespect to the few people on here who do know what they are talking about.
i dont even need to quote some of the mis information on this post.
just check it out for yourselves.

somone telling another person that 800 degrees F is way too hot it just rediculous
and etc and etc. if you dont know, dont answer, dont give out the wrong information, it wastes the persons time who needs the help.
someone has to agree with that.
