***92-95 D16Z6- SOHC vtec. Transmission Bearings Replacement***
Alright, I am attempting to replace the plastic cased bearings in a 92' Si' hatch's transmission as it is making that lovley change sounding noise.
I have removed the tranny from the car and have pulled the housing apart. There looks to be many wasted bearings. I need to know exactly which bearings need to be replaced.
Here are some pics.I am hoping some of you may have done this already and may even have the part #'s still...... Please piont out which need to be changed.
TIA.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hey try PM'ing MistaBone. I recall that he's torn sohc tranny's apart on a number of ocassions so I'm pretty sure he'll know what to do. Good luck.
Why do you need to replace?
sorry I can't help but I might need to do the same thing.. (2nd gear grinds)
hm.. I hope this is not too hard to do...

the bearings need to be changed due to a nasty whining noise, and I heard that if the bearings fail, say goodbye to the tranny... It doesn't have to do with grinding... that would be the synchros, the brass gears on the shaft...

OK, sorry for the delay, but I do work!
If you have more than one wasted bearing you are best off to replace ALL the bearings.
Transtar should have a kit.
Bearings #3,4,5 don't need a press to get off/on, just a hammer, socket, workmate bench, etc.
#2, input shaft bearing can be knocked out from the over side of case, though the shaft opening with a 1/4" socket extension IF the bearing is not toast.
#1 has to be pressed on/off.

Take it from me because I've had it happen 2 times years ago:
If your SOHC tranny starts to make a roarong type noise, especially when you let the clutch out, REPLACE THE CASE BEARINGS or at least the main and countershaft bearings or your tranny will be garbage soon after.
Back when I didn't know better my 1992 Si tranny started making that noise and I ignored it. Months later I was locked out of 1,2 and reverse gears.
Dropped in a used tranny and it too began the same noise. Again I ignored it and I was left again with only 3,4, and 5th gears for a week until I could find another tranny.
It's just so much better to go ahead and replace all the bearings while you're in there.
*IF* your synchros look hammered though, you might want to start thinking about finding a lower-mileage used tranny from a hybrider or something.
Synchros get really expensive - I also know this from having to replace one in my ITR tranny.
As far as getting those bearings out, a bearing puller with the little "jaws" and a mini-slide hammer really helps. The diff bearings will need more power, so it might just be easier to take the whole diff (once removed
) to a machine shop with a nice big press and have them get them off.
Pressing them back in isn't very hard, but you'll need to be even when you do it.
some of the bearings are a tad delicate so use some finesse or you'll have just as bad of a bearing going in as the one that came out.
Good luck!
Nice pics by the way. Damn I wish I had a nice camera to ducument all of the neato jobs i've done on my car.

Yes. Thank you very much fellas. But what is Transtar???? Should we order the bearings from them???? Cause we're lookin at about $200+ for them online.
edit: Never mind my esteemed coligue figured it out! And what is even better is that the are located in SACRAMENTO....about a 15 minute drive!!!
He's going to pick them up on his lunch break!!
Thanx again!

Replace the 1-2 shifter fork while doing the rebuild. It will cost about $50 from the dealer. It is not included in the rebuild kit.
D series synchros are cheap, $20 each shipped if price hasn't went up in the past year or so.
My supplier hopes I don't do another groupbuy, wiped out 4 warehouses last time!

... so, the rebuild kit costs $264, and another $100 for synchros. Not too bad at all
I shouldn't even bother with it due to the fact that i wanna ditch the SOHC anyway. But, it'll be another thing accomplished, and more knowledge for me...
