Default Anyone still interested? Toyota/B16A hybrid piston/rod package for SOHC D-series engines..

Hey people. Sorry I disappeared for a while there.. my grandmother died recently and I had to fly over to Australia (from Thailand) for her funeral.

Is there anyone still interested in my hybrid/piston rod combo package? It allows any D-series engine to boost 1-1.2 bar safely without sleeving. All that's needed is good fuel management (hondata,etc..) and a blockguard. (and you need to grind the bottom of the D-series block a little in order to give clearance for the B16 rods.

Prices are as follows..

CLICK HERE for latest info & pricing on the packages

The only thing that you need to buy is B16A rod bearings. The reason why I can't include these is because I have to order them from Honda, and since we don't have any cars in Thailand on sale with the B16A, they need to call up Honda Japan to special order the bearings. That means added expense which you wouldn't need to incur, since you guys have the Civic Si, with the B16A as standard.

The only thing I've ever broken was the pistons, and that was due to bad tuning and too much boost (like when I pushed it over 1.3 bar), but when its happened, all I needed to do was change that particular piston, and slap on some new piston rings, and everything was okay. Compression back to normal, car running perfectly. Personally, I'd keep spares because I don't think you can get Toyota 1G-GTE pistons over there.

One more thing.. for those who really REALLY don't want to use the 2nd hand pistons (even though its what i've been using, and works perfectly okay), I can order you brand new ones.. but it costs a bit.. so if there's anyone who wants to pay more for new pistons, reply here and let me know. If I see some interest, i'll check the prices. But IMHO, the 2nd hand pistons will do the job just fine.

what's the CR with that combo? say in Y8 engine, or A6?

Are the Toyota pistons Forged or Cast Aluminum?

When it was running in my Civic, I had 8.2:1 compression, but that was because I had a thick headgasket (2.5mm if I remember correctly). Yes, I know that sounds very low to you people, but I wanted to push the car over 1.2 bar (at my own risk of course) and so I wanted things to be as safe as they possibly could. This was in a D16Y8 engine. Perhaps some people here could help me clarify if the internals (stroke, piston size) of the D16A6 (and any other D-series engines that you people use in the US) is the same as the D16Y8, because the only SOHC engine they have here is the D16Y8, and i'm sure many of you would be wanting to put this into an engine which isn't a D16Y8. This combo works perfectly in a D16Y8, because that was the engine I used this combo in.

Why did you use B16 rods and change the rod length of the motor?

Grab a D16Y8 connecting rod, and a B16A connecting rod, and put them side by side. Then you will understand why I used B16A connecting rods. The D-series rods are toothpics compared to the B16A rods

The Toyota pistons' height make up for the length of the rod, that's why its still usable in a D series engine.

Do these pistons/rods also fit into the Y8 Block? I'm assuming when you say we need to grind the bottom of the d-series block, that we need to knotch the block, correct?

What times were you running @ 1 bar on D-Series motor? I'm very interested in your offer Nathan.
Yes, notching is what I was trying to say Its just that the B16A rods are much thicker than that of the D16 rods, and so there needs to be more clearance for them to rotate in the engine without hitting anything. I used to use this combo in my D16Y8 (which was in a 1998 EK Civic sedan). It worked wonders, and saved me a lot of money on buying forged pistons/rods, since I wasn't originally going to boost any higher than 1.2 bar

I can give you times, but you people have to understand that due to the extremely hot and humid climates here, cars tend to run a lot slower than what they do in the US. I ran using street tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE711 - 205/45/R16) on 16" Enkei RP01 rims with no limited slip. Had a bit of trouble taking off, since 1st and 2nd gear had no traction at all.. went through the 400m line at 13.4@183km/h - this was in a fully loaded sedan with rear seats and spare tire. That was at 1.1 bar of boost. With slicks, and a bit of weight reduction, i'm sure I could have gotten it into the 12's.. if it was a hatchback.. woo.. i'd hate to think what times I could have got

Do you have the website done?

Thanks

What's the compression ratio with a stock y8 head gasket and y8 head? I'm guessing around 9.2:1 or so?

I *think* that's about right. On my engine, I was running with a 2.5mm headgasket, and I ended up with an 8.2:1 compression ratio. Maybe you guys can calculate it out from there..

If it can work on the D16Y8, then it should be able to work on a D16Z6 too. I don't think i'll be able to finish the website now, because i just don't have the time to sit down and create it, however the installation of this combo is nothing difficult, if you already know how to replace pistons, rods, and rod bearings, and know how to grind/notch your block.

My mechanic used B16A bearings.. i'm not sure whether you can use D16 bearings, but perhaps the B16A bearings can take more of a beating.. I'll have to check things out.

I'm currently making my first batch, in order to work out packaging and get it weighed, etc. The machine shop is quite busy at the moment, so please give me some time. For those of you seriously interested (and are just waiting on me to tell you the shipping cost), please e-mail me at nathan@boost-up.com, with the subject "Need Shipping Cost" and tell me your name and what area/zipcode you live in. So many people have IMed me that i've lost track of some people, and when I go to the couriers, I want to get everyone's destinations calculated so I don't need to go there again. Thanks

I'm using D16 bearings with my LS rods, no stock bearings for me...the ACLs WILL take a beating (thanks Rocket)

hmmm, I'm still confused as to HOW to get it working in my block. So basically, I have to give my block, the supra pistons, and b16 rods to a machine shop? The supra pistons and b16 rods dont come attached, do they? or...what?
