Roll cage in Civic Del Sol? How?
I plan on fixing up a Del Sol for racing. I really want to put a roll cage in there to stiffen up the car. The rear window has to stay in and the roof has to be functional. Has anyone done this before? if so, got any pictures?
thanks!
thanks!
They are hard to find but I believe that OPM has a caged shell sitting in their shop right now. Try calling them.

Are you sure all the windows have to stay? Most Racing serires would let you run the bars through the rear window and into th trunk, ie.e you can remove windows to facilitate instalation of a cage. The few that I have seen have the roof bolted/welded on and the bars through the rear windows and into the trunk.
Also There is a guy on this message board. http://www.darksol.com Named Tim, who as a cages in his car withough goigh through the rear windows.

Every car in this forum races in the rain. You are not allowed to race any time with your side windows up (not even in the rain) so what is the difference if the back window is out? Less water comes in through the back anyway.

You could always make a lexan rear window to replace the one you would take out for the cage, it would let you remove all of the heavy rear power windows stuff also.

What type of racing is this? Club, drag, ...?
The SCCA GCR permits the rear braces to attach to the stock seatbelt soulder anchor points IF you use a petty bar as well (diagonal from behind driver's head to front hoop in passenger footwell). Of course, this makes the car useless for ride-alongs at HPDE events.
The other option is to remove the rear glass and use standard rear braces (which must also pass through the body work and down to the frame). If you are worried about rain (which I don't think you should be), you can always cut some lexan to fit.

at http://www.automotivetech.org the guys name is Mackey. he has a Cusco bar. I heard some place imported just one, and he bought it. they don't have, nor plan on getting any more. if you go looking there you should find pictures of it.
No one makes a bolt in cage for sale in the US. gotta get it custom made.
Cuscos's is an interesting design. Roll bar with two rear bars. Two rear bars go down thru rear compartments, and attach to floor below rear window, above gas tank.
or look here for pics of a real cage

one guy asked about someone with the cusco bar, that's the pcture of it.
What's unsafe about it?
Lots of people think that it's too far forward from first impressions, but after looking into it, and realizing you should never drive it with the seat reclined (like it is in the picture) most people agree that's the spot for it if you keep a full interior. That's the only spot where you can get the rear bar above the helmet, yet still have the targa top fit. When the driver's seat is in an upright racing position, the bar is good and safe, a ways behind the seat. The pink roll cage has the bar in about the same position.
But it's not a good bar for the street, because with the seat reclined at all, the bar is over and to the side of your head wich is very bad. also any full cage like the pink one would be very bad to drive without a helmet.
