Default Shaving block for turbo clearance

I'm FINALLY installing my turbo...I almost had to kill my car, but the Tool Gods saved me with an electric impact wrench

Anyway, I had to shave some off my block to get the T3 to fit in there with the Greddy Manifold on my D16. I still need to shave some more though. It fits now, but there isn't enough room between the compressor inlet and the block to let me put a hose on it for the filter (only about 1/16-1/32 of an inch to spare now )

How far can I shave it? I can't take a pic, but I found this in a search and it's shaved in the same place, but I think I need to go a bit further

I've used a cheap angle grinder (piece of **** was $14 with some discs!) and a chisel and hammer, haha. The chisel actually worked surprisingly well. I'm going to have to go at it again, when I put the oil pan back on (to avoid metal in the engine!!!)

Any defiinite numbers on how much you can grind off of that pictured spot? Anyone ever hit something they didn't want to?

back from dead... how much of the block can be shaved? I have a 4bolt, and it's going to look like there's going to be ALOT of shaving. Just wondering if it hurts the rigidity of the block itself.

you wont have to shave with the max rev, i have the max rev and the garret t3/04e and everything fit in nice, no shaving or fighting neededs.
now the fans on the other hand had to go , i got pusher fans ,
but the pass side fan can be trimmed down and will fit snug

Funny thing is...I did get the turbo on (have had it on for ages now) but I have a minor (really major) exhaust leak that is caused by the compressor housing being against the block, when the manifold is torqued down. I had the manifold resurfaced on both the head and turbo plates, so I think the combination of the two moved the turbo enough to make this an issue...back to grinding...good thing I just got the new Pro Dremel tool thingie

That's scary and not needed you can turn the turbo around so the fat part sticks to the front or find a manifold that relocates the turbo better. I have ran a dinky t-3 and now a large t-3/t4 and still could fit a much bigger turbo. The down side is the filter will be ran off the other side, but on mine i have actually made a cai out of an old intake tube.

oh well props to the guys with the angle grinders

actually, yes it is necessary. I tried numerous different positions of rotation of the compressor housing and it didn't help. It's true I could've got a different manifold, but that would cost and possibly still not fix the problem, since I have a ghetto-weird rebuilt T3 off of a volvo...I think I'm just going to slide another Mr.Gasket thick copper gasket in there and it should fix the problem. Not very elegant, but neither is grinding off the block

Dead thread lives again!!!

I didnt have to shave any of my block off to get my t3/t4 to fit with my rev hard manifold. I just rotated the both sides of the turbo till it worked, had a custom tail flange welded on my compresor and that fixed my fitment problems.

im putting a max rev kit on a b18b and im having the same probs...im gunna try tomorrow to flip the turbo around and see what happens, i pray that it will work b/c if not my absolute last resort (besides spending more $$ on another manifold) is to shave the block.

Thank goodness I don't have to trim my block. FWIW, a max rev mani with a 5bolt housing on it gives PLENTY of room. And no, I am not about to hit the clutch slave cylinder, it just looks that way. I have at least one inch of clearance from my inlet to the nipple
