Default D16z6 vs. D16a6

I know the z6 has vtec and has more hp, but i just think the a6 gets no respect and that the 108 hp numbers are understated. I've seen quite a few dynos of the a6 and all of them put out close to 100 hp to the wheels. I think the true factory numbers for a a6 is 115 hp and about 110 torque.

What do you guys think? I'd like to hear your thoughts about this topic. I'm sure most of you think that the z6 is much better though, i can see it already.

I've got a D16Y8 (2 more horsepower than a Z6) in my CRX, and let me tell you... The A6 feels like a turd compared to the Y8. The A6 has no top end compared to the Y8 or Z6. These two motors pull hard all the way to 7000, while the A6 falls off at around 6000+. There is a calculator for horsepower, it's like quarter mile trap speed, weight, and something else, and you can figure out horsepower to the wheels this way. My A6 was something llike 92

I have an A6 still...and it's great...but seriously...unless you beef it up with internals and a turbo...what's the point? VTEC will always own.

You could easily do the basic bolt ons and own a z6

i have an a6 for another week till i go b16, bt i have to say w/ a lil head work, the a6 is great, i have a gude head cam and ecu, i know its faster than a z6 of course then you could do the same to a z6.

but im still happy w/ my a6, jst now the rings are goin out, i purchased the head not to long ago, ill prolly be sellin everything from my a6 after the swap

My friend drives a '93 Del Slo with the D16Z6, AEM CAI, full exhaust, and a V-AFC. My '91 CRX SI with a short-ram intake and ghetto exhaust schools him every time, I know I have less weight but I school him BAD.

when you figure in the dyno number being close to 100 whp, you have to consider the age and mileage of the engnie, usually older engines will have more carbon buildup which raises compression and hp...but still the a6 is a great motor to build up, i love my midrange on this thing its so much fun...The z6 is another great motor, just have to decide if you want vtec or not...

i got nothin' but for the d-series

It'd take quite a few bolt ons.

In stock form with the basic bolt ons (i/h/e), the a6 is quick at best, but that is why the real only way to get the a6 going is to get the internals done. And that's what i'm considering. I've called a few places up that offer head packages and they go for about $1300 to $1500. And it's supposed to give me 35 to 50 HP to the wheels. I think that is cheap HP. Now i don't know because of the internal work done, the engine will most likely age faster, but that's not a bad idea.

If i can hit low 14's, i'd really be happy with that. That means i'm in the same class as a WRX or a HondaS2000 and faster than a Integra Type R.

you will never get 35-50 more whp out of an a6 without boost

I believe the Gude head package on the D16A6 gives you around 50+ horsepower. I could be wrong but I remember reading that a while back.

What is included in this head package? Other than the cam, valvetrain and head work, they better supply you with all the bolt ons, great fuel management and one hell of a tuner. There is absolutely no way you can get 50whp from just a head package on a d16a6. Even with increased compression, this number would still be very very very hard to acheive.

Ported and polished - high compression cylinder head, racing valve grind, ported intake manifold, matched ECU (if applicable), and cam(s) of your choice. Race Header are available at addtional cost.

The 50 HP to the wheels is obviously the maximum you can expect. Gude said you will get 35-50, so 50 is the extreme mark. But i think about 35-50 is very reasonable. You can easily get 10 alone from their cam and a clean racing head will make another 10 HP. You add in their the ported manifold and the ported TB to free up airflow throughout the whole engine along with the ECU to make it all work together, i think it's kind of obvious you can get at least 35 HP minimum with a possibility of more.

Ummm...no. Low 14's is what my R ran pretty much bone stock.

Anyhow, I/H/E really wakes up the D16A6 and it pulls strong all the way to redline. I agree, the A6 is underrated on HP. I've schooled many Hondas that were susposed to have more HP than my 91 Si and I've seen a few dynos with the A6 making about 100HP pretty much stock.

The cool thing about the A6 is that a ton of performance parts/ecu mods are still made for it and you can get some good reliable amounts of HP out of that motor.

Does anyone know where there are dyno plots of d16a6's online. I am very curious to see their powerband.

Import Tuner's website just had a dyno of a a6 and it did about 95 to the wheels. I'm sure you will see it in the website if you look for it.

And also, i know the TYPE R Integra does about 14.7 stock, so if it had i/h/e in it, it would probably run low 14's, which is something i would be very happy with.
