Default "True" Coilovers vs. coilover sleeves w/ GOOD shocks

Is there a big difference in the two? Could the coilover sleeve with good shocks perform just as good as a "true" coilover?

Yes they can, depending on the components chosen. From a general standpoint, there really isn't that much different between the two. Some "true" coilovers still end up using a sleeve.

i believe the main advantage of running say ground control + koni is you can replace each piece separately is you need it, whereas most true coilovers (APEXi, TEIN) you have to buy the full set of four. Correct me if im wrong

I'm sure you could, at a price competitive with some of the more "exotic" brands. You just have to know where to look.

a helper spring sits on top of the main spring and just makes sure that everything seats properly after the suspension has been in full droop.

what do you plan on using these for? For some road racing series, you have to use a sleeve rather than a threaded-body shock (SCCA IT).

Exactly. And in other words, they are pretty pointless. Don't get helper springs.

i was gonna buy a set of "true coilovers" or whatever but when i realized for the same $ as an entry set of say h&r's or neuspeeds that was only height adjustable and only came in 1 rate i decided that its better to go gc/koni. i got the neuspeed version koni yellows with custom gc's 400f and 350r. you have complete adjustability of the system and let me tell you it kicks a$$

<Begin Rant>Only the totally clueless wanna be's call threaded body shocks with springs "true" coilovers. A coilover is a friggin coilover. There is no club where somehow coilovers that utilize sleeves are somehow excluded and not considered "true". My race car has threaded body shocks as part of its suspension and it is a coilover suspension. My street car has GC sleeves and it too is a coilover suspension.</End Rant> Sorry about the rant but I really hate that whole tendency of import guys to refer to "true" coilovers. Not bashing at all but the only difference in theory is that one has threads cut into the shock body and the other has sleeves that slide over the shock body. The quality of the actual damper is generally differentiating factor.

What about "true" coilovers?

i agree, dumbass usage of the pseudo "true" coilovers. the problem lies in the even more dumbass misuse of the term "coilover". i had my little rant here a long time ago, seems ppl would rather go on sounding ignorant.

than I'm still trying to understand why you would choose steel bodied shocks if you care about those things....

Cost. There is a point of diminishing return on your dollar, which is different for everyone.

RJ - bought koni and GC sleeves and is happy
