what engine mods are worth it? and why?
headers, final drive, clutch, flywheel, etc?
If you ask me as an adult...... Car modding is not worth money at all

man, you guys are harsh.
doing anything to a itr doesn't produce too much results because its allready tuned so well.
I would say lightweight flywheel, and a header are good options that dont have a down side. But both are expensive. If you go with a header, you need to get a new cat with it.
People like the final drive, but personally I couldn't stand not having the top end.

Well id say from dyno results ive seen....cold air intake AEM or ice box, a jdm 4-1 header isn't to bad but not needed really and a hi-flo cat to match the exhaust and act like striaght pipe, sure our cars are tuned pretty good but only until it hast o do with emissions and thats the biggest hp loss most of the time....and a skunk2 or toda cam is really good....flywheel is good and so is final drive but thats an expensive mod...but it payes off nicely....do not do exhaust because it does almsot nothin on our car espeically cat back, maybe unless you raise the compression then 2.5 could be a good idea with a 2.5 cat, but a stock 2.25 cat is fine too on a stock US type R, compression isn't that much of difference really to make all that worth it...jdm 4-1 is an ok idea if you can get it in 2.25 for stock ehaust size....and advancing timing does an ok gain for free, i felt it in mine a good amount....

Bolt-ons are not worth it at all. Is it worth spending upwards of 3k to get an extra 10 horse? Spend 5k for an extra 20? If you are rebuilding an engine or building one from scratch then there are things that I would consider being "worth it", but the only reason is because the engine is apart and it already costs too much. There's no reason to rebuild a motor anyway unless you're doing it yourself because to do it properly you'll spend as much as a new motor.
Final drive is iffy. Whether it actually improves lap times is dependent on what the track you run on is like. What it does for sure is makes the car noiser on the street, uses more gas and wears the engine more.
Boost is cool. Much more cost effective, but you have to know what you're doing and you have to understand that you're going to have a lot more downtime than you would with a stock car. Plus you can get into trouble easier, but of course if you're the type of person who likes boost you're probably the same kind of person who likes more boost. It's easy enough blowing up a NA motor, I can't imagine how easy it is with boost.
Coles notes: advance your ignition timing, modify your resonator box, tighten your valve lash, index your spark plugs... hell, even port match whatever you can do yourself. Just don't spend any money on it because it's either going to be wasted or it's going to end up costing at least twice as much as you expect.
