Storage insurance?
Ok, starting this fall, I won't be able to drive my R much as I will be moving to a house within 1/4mi from work w/ no garage. I will be storing it at a secure location, but I will only be driving it, maybe, once every 3-4 weeks.
What's the cheapest form of insurance I can get if I won't be driving/driving much? Is there such thing as storage insurance?
Thanks for the info.

Re: Storage insurance? (Cosworth)
Tell your insurance company that you wish them to classify it as a "pleasure vehicle". That's about the best you can do, if there's a lien present on the title. Banks require that a vehicle remain insured by a "full coverage" policy, regardless of how often you drive it.

Pat, who has two pleasure vehicles and one "to work or school ten miles or less each way" vehicle

Thanks for quick replies, fellows.
I already have pleasure vehicle status on the R. Was hoping there would be something cheaper. Oh well.

Re: Storage insurance? (EFFECT)
If you're going to store the car for an extended time - say 3-4 months over the winter without driving it - then you can take the car out of service and suspend coverages. This means that you keep the comprehensive coverage but you don't have liability or collision coverage. You'll only be paying around 25 percent of your regular insurance during that period. However, it's not really for times when you're using the car occasionally; it's for the period when you aren't using the car at all.

Cos - Yes...that is true, however this really depends on your insurance company/bank. I used to have a loan with my Prelude (lease) and the bank would let me put it in storage and suspend charges. I still needed to carry a minimal coverage, but it's dirt cheap.
You can also sometimes see this on a car that is not fully paid for (bank 0wnz Yu0!), and the insurance company/bank can dictate whether or not you can drop coverage. Ask your bank (call anonymously) what they do in the cases where a person drops coverage. Sometimes the bank will find out...and CHARGE you the extra amount. THIS IS NOT PRETTY, because they wont give a crap how much it is (usually its outragous)...I had this happen to me too. If they don't really do anything (you'll be able to tell if they dont give a really quick answer), then youll be fine. Just call the insurance company and drop the coverage and claim that its in storage and you want minimum coverage.
Brandon - who knows way too much about this subject.

Re: Storage insurance? (AssPenny)
I regularly change my coverages.. If I go on vacation for two weeks, I take off everything but comprehensive until I get back. Even if I just drive on the weekends I take coverage off during the week. I have the luxury of being able to do this with a phone call 24 hrs a day though.

Re: Storage insurance? (sackdz)
Yes. But what does that matter?
Lein = full coverage at all times required by the lease/finance company
In order to classify your car as "pleasure vehicle" :
1) Must have more than 1 vehicle on policy
2) Must adhere to mileage restrictions placed by the company
Bottom line = call your agent.

Is the Type R your only car? Buy a beater and drop your rates in two ways - multicar discount, and pleasure classification on the Integra.
