Ok...looked super easy. ran into a problem. Got the old one off and new one on but when i turn key to on position fuel is sprayed out of the bottom of the filter where the fuel line goes in. What did i do wrong? how do i fix it? thanks for any help.
Edit: Thinking of the wrong filter...
Yes, the 2 big ones go on the top, on either side of the fuel line, and the small one goes on the bottom. With out all these washers, the filter will not properly seal. You need to find the small one. Perhapse look on your old filter,
It's also helpful if you use a 'Flare Nut' wrench rather than a regular wrench. Do not over tighten these fittings...

It came with 3 washers two big and one small. I put the big ones on top and the little one on the bottom inlet. The small washer has disappeared. Would that be the problem? also is the small one the one that goes in the bottom inlet?

I really don't see how you can mess up.. their hard/fixed lines... your fuel filter should have come w/ these metal crush washers that your supposed to replace for the top and you just tighten the nuts/bolts and it should be fine.. other than making sure their tight enough and making use of the new washers I've never encountered any problems w/ leaking..
check to see where its leaking.. I hope you didn't bend/break the hard gas lines.. I've heard of someone doing that because they didn't take my advice not to bend out and to hold/support the filter and lines while unfastening...
reefer: whats the diff between a flare nut and a regular open end/combination wrench? I don't think I have a flare nut wrench whats it look like, how is it diff? thanks..

This is a flare nut wrench:
It's used specifically for, well, flare nuts! It puts more even pressure them so you don't mess up your connection...
It grips on like 4 sides rather than just 2.

oh cool thanks.. so the opening is smaller and has more sides to grip cuz it curves out than a regular open end wrench right? so to slip it on you slip the flare nut wrench on the line (lower than the nut) then slide it up to the nut right? or is the opening still be enough to slip on the nut>?
aight well I think I'll buy a Craftsman set next time I need to do the fuel filter (or brake master cyl line/nuts).. looks like it'd come in handy.. thanks for clarifying..

I have a special O2 sensor socket, the one that has a slit up the one side... Sometimes you can't get enough torque on a wrench to get O2 sensors out. Nuttin like the good ole o2 socket, 1/2" drive ratchet, and cheater bar!
Trending Topics
You should pick up both sets for metric, and standard SAE... 6-to-20 mm to 3/8 -to-11/16 that will cover everything from brake lines to the O2 sensor...

damn I'm gonna need those locking rolling tool chests in the garage soon.. my tool collection keeps growing and growing as I start doing more and more stuff to our cars and buying more tools Lolz.. right now I just have all the tools on shelves
EDIT: damn sockets w/ a slit for the O2 wire? thats sounds useful/handy... who makes it? where can I get one? got a pic?
I wonder what other tools/specialty tools there are out there that I've never heard of.. but would have made past repair, upgrade, install jobs easier for me.. feel free to name stuff I've never heard of...
I already have all the regular sockets, ratchets, breaker bar, torque wrench, angle ratchets, open end/combination wrench, hex key, hex sockets, screwdrivers (both normal and ones that attach to the ratchet, brake compression cube, C clamp, brake plier/puller (for drums), bleeder kit, needle nose, vise grip, crescent wrench, pry bars, rubber mallot, hammer, big *** hammer, crimpers, wire cutters, drills, reciprocating saws, jig saws, rotary tools, several jacks (2.5-3.5 tons) and several pairs of jack stands (2 ton - 6 tons), what else is out?
GSRsdn: sorry for raping your thread and talking about tools ...

Best thing ever, Craftsman Professional tool chest. Get everything in it's proper drawer, and arranged neatly. Get wrench racks, and socket holders.
It really comes in handy when you're cleaning up and you realize that the 10mm is still under the car somewhere cause it's slot is empty! Just last night. I did that with a 12mm socket. I was like whoops, not there, gotta go look for it!
OT... Sorry.. I just get all excited when talking about tools...
Edit: Craftsman Club sale days rule!!!
And no you're not cheap, else you'd be buying Buffalo tools or something.
I prefer the term 'Frugal'...

Teken: haha yeah your not the only cheap one.. money's money.. doesn't matter if u make a lot... the more u save the bettah... unless I'm in a bind and NEED it today I usually buy the tools when they have the sales/club saver days.. and if its no hurry at all I'll wait until Xmas, fathers day, labor day, etc or whenever to see if they have those 1/2 off everything sales.. then I have a big *** list of tools I've wanted but don't really NEED right away and buy them then Lolz...
damn tools under the bed? I think I have too many tools to fit under the bed.. I can't even imagine lugging the 100+ lbs 3.5 ton SUV jack up stairs to my room then pushing it under my bed Lolz that thing is heavy... glad I have a garage.. but yeah my stuff isn't too organized being just on shelves...
Reefer: yeah I need one of those.. they need to have a big sale or close out then I'll buy one.. I wonder if that would fit in my car.. w/ my audio.. I have no trunk space = (... Tools are fun Lolz..

Well i used all the washers and im still having the problem, but now the fuel is running not spraying. also The fuel line wont screw into the filter all the way(i can still see the thread) Is it sposed to go all the way in. Maybe acura gave me the wrong filter!? This simple task is turning into a damn project.
try taking the bottom line out again and putting it back in and tightening it again.. if the washer is in and you have the right filter you shouldn't have any problems.. you might also want to try a little teflon tape on the flare nut... other than that I really don't know.. I've done the fuel filters on my cars a few times, did a few friends and my parents cars and never had a problem w/ just using the new washers and tightening it back down..
sorry I'm not that helpful
sorry I'm not that helpful
To get back on topic...
If you use all the washers, how they were supposed to be used, that is a problem.
Did the bottom thread in nicely? You didn't cross thread it did you. I might suggest pulling it back out and checking the condition of the threads and re-doing it. Also, did you take the old washer off? If you have 2 washers that can leak just as bad as no washer... I don't remember if the bottom threads in all the way or not. I don't think so...

Um, my fuel filter only came w/ 2 washers for the top banjo fitting. I used a fuel filter from Pep Boys, I can't remember what brand, but I replaced it in about 15 mins, no problems w/ any fuel leaking.

god damn...i dont know what i did but...its still leaking i tried to crank the car..it started and it was spraying really bad. and to top that..the bolt for the fuel line is now stripped so its stuck in the filter half assed. what can i do now!? I know this shouldnt have been such a pain in the ***.[Modified by GsrSdn, 2:52 PM 7/25/2002]
Sorry I didn't respond earlier I only just saw this, else I could have saved you lots o stress.
I had the same problem, what did it was to push the fuel line up into the filter as far as possible then tighten the nut. just pushing it there and turning won't do it. Try pushing it as far as it would go while applying this pressure tighten the nut as much as possible.
This did it for me.

Patrick94GSR: I used the same filter as you.. it was a Purolator filter from pep boys and came w/ 2 washers for the top banjo fitting..
GSRSDN: I guess you threaded it in wrong
not sure how you can go about replacing the nut/line
when I installed mine I put the bottom fuel line into the filter then threaded it on by hand.. done this on several cars w/o a problem
Reeferbob & Teken: Lolz just got the jul 28-aug 3 Sears catalog today... $269 for a 75th annive 9 chest tool chest.. still waitin for close out or 1/2 off Lolz..

I'd say force the fitting out off the filter, throw the filter out, buy a new one, and then just run a die on the threads... that should take care of it. Might be a bit awkward to get a die in there, but you'll manage..

did u use an OEM fuel filter or a generic one? i ran into the same problem. there is no washer for the bottom line. i bought a filter from pep boys and the bottom fuel lne would not seal right. i bought a OEM one and it popped in no problem. i'd try the $20 filter before buying new lines

Im using OEM straight from the acura dealer..Im thinking i used the wrong size wrench to tighten up the bolt..im sure its suposed to be metric but i used a 9/16
can someone tell me what the right size is. hopefully i just threaded it wrong and the bolt isnt too stripped and i can just unscrew and try again.

i'm not positive but its probly a 12 or 14mm that you'll need...man i swear the easiest things to replace always ends up being a pain in the ***
