Default Do MPG generally improve after engine breakin?

I haven't gotten through my first tank all the way yet but my mileage so far seems less then stellar for a 17 gallon tank. I have a new EX V6 and was wondering if mileage is a little worse at first.

Sure I've been using the AC a bit and drive in traffic but my old car with slightly less city/highway MPG ratings seemed to fair a bit better under the same conditions. Maybe just cause its new?
