OT: What is THE WORST thing you have ever seen done to a car?
This was inspired by Mike's post regarding the PVC rollbar. I didn't want to take that thread off-topic so I figured I would start a new one.
My story goes back to when I was attending Roanoke College. Back then I drove a 1st gen CRX Si with a full 6-point rollcage in it. Since there was nothing to do in Salem Virginia me and a friend spent a lot of time messing with our cars. As a result we would go to Autozone a lot (the only parts store in town). There was a guy with what appeared to be a mid-70s Firebird that always gravitated to me and my car. He didn't work at the Autozone but he seemed to be there ALL the time. He was stereotypical with the mullet, greasey shirt with holes in it and missing teeth. His car was a combination of rust/primer with skinnies in the front and jacked up in the back. He loved looking at my cage and was amazed by its design.
One day I went to get some oil and he was there. He called me over to his car to show me his newest "addition". I walk over and see a full rollcage. As I looked it over I noticed the following:
- It only had 4 points (no tubes going to the rear of the car)
- It was made out of exhaust tubing
- It was crush-bent
- It was stick welded together
I questionned its strength and he said it would hold. He then proceeded to grab a pipe and yank on it. The welds broke and he flew back landing on his *** with the pipe in his hand.
I laughed and walked away.

Homemade 1966 VW Squareback... convertible
It once was a clean Cal-look VW that performed decently, but was really a much better (and very cool) boulevard cruiser. I witnessed the transformation as the stationwagon like body was morphed (through the use of a hacksaw) into a whole lot of open area with NO cross bracing or under-pan bracing.
When it was finished, you could sit on the bumper and watch it flex
Sadly, it broke in two some months after its creation.
...it was funny to be 14 and telling some guy in his 20's that that seemed like a bad idea...

Dateline: Kershaw SC, August 2000.
MaddMatt, r2x, Ron and a handful of others are making the requisite stop at the Amoco on our way out of town after a weekend at CMP. Now my car did tend to attract attention, and as usual, the ricers came out in full force to check it out.
The one most interested in my car is driving a white 4-door Integra. The chin and rocker sills have been painted MSY, with a MSY Chicken Wire grill up front. It was an automatic. Type R stickers everywhere.
So he rolls up and I take a quick glance inside his car and almost collapse on the spot. This guy has placed the same yellow chickenwire stuff from the front of his car in front of his gauges. You couldn't see them AT ALL.
It was nice.

Lets See 2 years ago I decided to go to the TSCC autocross @ GTCC in jamestown, and I see this Green early 90's Accord Station Wagon, it had gold every where but a PY-ITR Wing on the back of it and genuine Type R stickers on teh side in gold... I was almost crying I was laught so hard looking at the type-r wing on the back/top of the staion wagon.

Hmmm.... I don't think so.
That Ronald McDonald mobile must be fast. He's got the same swoosh things that the Flash has on the side of his head. Plus it's red like the Flash.....think about it.......huh?.........okay, maybe its just ghey.
I live in Sterling and I've seen that crx too. HAHA!!
I' actually saw two convertible CRX's when I was in State College PA. One was a 1st gen and the other a 2nd. Both looked like they came from the factory. Not my cup of tea, but well done conversions.

this may not seem like the worst thing to do, but i used to have a lot of rice ideas in my head, and unfortunately, a lot of them have come true (m3 mirror look on civics, paint matching the inner non-reflecting chrome surface of the 96+ civic headlights, a lot of the body kits i designed ive seen, and a couple other things im afraid to remember and admit) but i always recognized them as rice, just thinking of ways to turn rice into money.
one other idea i had was to paint stock seat belts red or blue. make it look like it was a harness or just stand out, better than dumb setbelt pads "powered by my ***". i still wonder if this could be done with a dye or paint that would not hinder the reliability by deteriorating the integrity of the webbing and still look good.
anyway, GOOD GOD, WTF is that guy with too much time with a Martha Stewart craft book and wood router thinking?
the convertible first gen is probably owned by some old whitebearded man ive seen in the past tool around Rockville, MD. several 1st gens were professionally converted by some independent company, even featured in some car mag, probably C&D. I certainly dont disagree with the job and looks and function.

It was a conversion offered by a company calle Straumann back in the mid 80's... Only a couple hundred ever got built, but the first gen was a very good job... a trunk was installed in place of the hatch, the top didn't leak, and there was a cross brace welded under the floorpan, as well as bracing in the doors... C&D used one for a small project, and ended up giving it away to a reader... the actual car was on EBAY a couple years ago... didn't sell for much though... Sorry, odd CRX knowledge is an area I excel in... hehe....

Wow, I was so caught up in the home depot extension kit that I almost didn't notice the... umm... thing on the roof.
