Default VSS horror story

so this is probably around my 8th attempt at wiring up an electronic VSS in my 88 crx dx.

(97 gsr cluster canadian model)

everything on the cluster is wired perfect except for the speedo.

after about the 6th attempt at wiring the vss, i pulled out my electronic vss unit from the tranny and the bottom half of the gear was chewed up a bit, and i found this to be because it wasnt installed all the way in and was a bit ****-eyed.

so i installed it all the way in, got the proper wire connector for the vss, plugged it in, wired it up, positive, ground and vss signal to b16 on ecu, happened to be i think a yellow and red wire.

the 7th attempt i got some odd information and for some reason i read that b11 was the proper vss wire on the ecu, which was a black and green wire.

after figuring out this was wrong i wired it back up to b16 which i believe is the correct one.

and the splice i ran to the orange wire on the cluster harness.

-----here is where the big issue starts

when i fired the car up to test drive it the first time (when i had it spliced into b11 on the ecu) i noticed the tach wasn't working, nor was the temp gauge, and nor was the ebrake light. but the fuel and turn signals seemed to work just fine.

thats when i decided to re check my wiring and reverted to the b16 wire on the ecu.

so can anyone tell me if my cluster is now [freak]ed?
there was no smoke or burning electronics, no blown fuses, and my signals work so the fuse for the cluster is still in action. the gauge lights (dimmer) work correctly.

also as an added bit of info, i have a safc wired up and the tach works correctly on this safc.

everything on the cluster was working up until today.

how can more than one thing on the cluster stop working just like that?

ive been trying to get this speedo working every year since 2004

the only thing i can tell u is to try the cluster in another car. im not certain on this but do u think that since the speed sensor is from an obd2 car that it wont work with a obd1 ecu.

ps im just assuming ur using an obd2 vss since the cluster is from a 97 car

Well I can't really help with your cluster possibly being fried now but here's the wire funsctions at the vss plug. (any vss would pretty much work, even if its an obd2 unit)

Speed sensor wiring
Wire location and function:

Looking at the plug from the wire side with the release button up:

Left wire: ground
Middle wire: +12v switched source
Right wire: speed signal(ecu and cluster)

VSS Wiring-
Run signal wire to BOTH spedometer AND ECU

GSR plugs

Is the wiring diagram of the VSS connector you supplied the same for a 1992-1995 Civic VSS Speed Sensor?

the plug i have is from a 92-95 civic and it is identical to this plug, same wire colors and location.

so this picture is of a 92-95 civic vss plug.

i would like to know if this is the same for an ek vss.

in the ek chilton it lists the colors as:

BLK/YEL - Power
BLK - Ground
BLU/WHT - Signal

and it lists them in this order.

does anyone have a picture of a plug harness off of an ek with these colored wires?

edit: thanks for the amazing pics and info though, this is exactly on the right track!

here is the ek diagram i think

so if i am reading this right, pin1 is ground, pin 2 is power and pin 3 is signal.

which would be the same as the picture above, just different wire colors.

can anyone confirm this?

Yes dan that Blue with White stripe is the output pulse of your sensor.

It should be ran to the ecu as well as the cluster. I once blew up a cluster by incorrectly wiring the fuel guage, i was swapping in an ek si cluster. That SUCKED, for me anyway.

blu/wht is also pretty common amongst other honda/acuras as well of similar year to the EK gen.

BUT NOT ALL of them.

Its always best to use a reference site like the12volt.com or similar when looking for a VSS in any car. Also any Viper/DEI alarm install place should have computer software that gives the vss color and location for almost any car, you just have to know how to ask.

Usually a $20 bill is helpful, and a good attitude.

Also try posting your question on honda-techs audio/electronics section, a lot of installers post in there:

Come on guys. Its not that bad, I know it doesn't look pretty but its wiring - get over yourselves. The connections are secure and very well insulated. By tapping into the wires, I didn't cut off the original crx plugs or wiring.

(Think about it.....To get heatshrink over this connection, you must cut the original wiring and I was not willing to do this)

Function > Form

I put a 94 Integra LS cluster into my 91 CRX, not exactly the same as yours but here is my thread :

https://honda-tech.com/zero...age=1

It took me a lot of research and then some trial and error once it actually came to the installation to get it all right. I had to look up pinouts for both clusters.

From what I remember I used a VSS from a 92-95 Civic. It fit into the tranny no problem but I had to cut off a couple of chunks of it to allow it to clear the tranny mount.

I also remember what I did with the 3 VSS wires was this :

- Ground I grounded to the metal dash frame
- Power I spliced into one of the power wires already going to the cluster
- Speed signal wire I had to split into two and run one to the cluster and one to the VSS signal that went to the ECU

If you need help PM me, I think that I have a wire list that I typed up somewhere, I will see if I can find it for you.

it needs to go to the orange cluster wire, and it also needs to go back to the ecu. without it you will get a check engine light for vss.
