WHAT IS THE BEST D-SERIES GEARING THAT I CAN GET?!?!
WHAT IS THE BEST D-SERIES GEARING THAT I CAN GET?!?!
Folks, I am growing tired of being asked this question over and over and over and over and over. It is listed in my signature, and my latest build thread which can be found here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1889537 what my transmission setup is.
Ideal gearing is subjective, asking a trans builder what gearing is "best" is equivalent to going up to a construction worker and saying "what is the best roof I can put over my head" The construction worker is going to look at you and be like "I should kick your *** for saying that you have a case of the mondays"
There are many factors that go into optimizing your transmission gearing
1. how much power your car makes. Are you trying to barely top out 4th gear when you drag race in the 1/4 mile?
2. your engines max rpm. I have no clue what you plan on doing with your engine.
3. is this car being used on the highway at high speeds for long periods of time? If you drive 400 miles on the highways every week, you probably aren't going to want super short gearing. And yes, short 1-4 + ultra long 5th SUCKS.
blah blah blah blah blah
Contrary to popular belief, There IS a reason that I am running the setup that I am. I didn't just stick all the gears in a pot, mix them up and randomly draw them while wearing a blindfold (OKAY I GUESS THIS IS GONNA BE MY THIRD GEARRR LOL)
Here is my setup feel free, to base your decisions/setup off of mine, trust me it's the best setup for me that exists.
I am using a D16Z6 transmission. It is a big bearing b000 case that allows me to run a quaife LSD. D16Y8 transmissions aren't better because of the steel forks, if you don't abuse your transmission, you'll never have fork problems. Don't power shift. I prefer the d16z6 trans over the d16y8 trans because I already had one, and because I have more spare parts (forks) for it.
I am running a quaife LSD because at the time, the obx lsd was problematic. At this point, I think that the OBX LSD is a good bang for the buck item.
I am using honda/bearings/seals. I am not using carbon synchros, simply because I have a large pool of good/used synchros to choose from.
Ratios
1st = 3.083 (<FONT COLOR="red">NEW</FONT>gear-x 1st gear
2nd = 1.909 D16Y8
3rd = 1.565 MFactory
4th = 1.259 cable dx/si 3rd gear flipped over as 5th
5th = 1.000 MFactory
final = 3.7222 (96-00 cx and 96-00 hx)
Q: Where can I find the 1st gear?
A: http://www.specialprojectsms.c...ID=90
Q: Why are you using a d16y8 2nd gear in a d16z6 transmission?
A: Because someone gave me a busted d16y8 transmission, the 2nd gear is SLIGHTLY shorter than the d16z6.
Q: Where can I get the MFactory gearing
A: http://www.teammfactory.com/pr...Gears
Q: Why are you using the 1.259 cable dx/si 3rd as 4th gear? Why not use the d16z6/d16y8 3rd of 1.250 as 4th gear?
A: I already had the 1.259 from another busted transmission. I simply did it just to be an ******* and to brag to people that are running a similar setup with a 1.250 4th gear. I want to be able to rub it in their face that my 4th gear is 0.74% shorter than theirs. Does it make a difference? Nope.
Q: Why are you running such a tall final drive, GAH 3.7222 SUCKS compared to my EX/SI 4.25
A: My gearing is still close ratio, the rpm drop between shifts is awesome. I stay in my power band at all times. The goal isn't to have super short gearing (aka just a final drive) The goal is to stay in your power band.
My highway rpms @ 80mph in 5th gear are like 4300rpm, less than a b16/itr 5th.
My gears end at the following mph with 7500rpm redline, 205/50/15s
1st = 45mph
2nd = 72mph
3rd = 88mph
4th = 110mph (my target trap speed)
5th = 138mph
I recommend this transmission setup to anybody, the only thing that some will not like is that 2nd gear is "too tall" I don't think that it is, but if a lot of your racing is between 40-65mph (like many autocrossers) then this setup might not be the best for you, oh well.
The next time somebody IMs me asking me what the best gearing is for their d-series civic, I am going to send them a URL to this thread and I'm not going to feel bad about it all. Have a nice day.

good stuff
lol you can stop PM'ing me too, like Bense said (it all depends on your setup)
here are some calculators (with honda gears "pre-loaded" into the caluculator) to help you figure out.
http://autocrossing.com/cgi-bin/gearcalc.cgi
http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/
my current gears on my D-series Turbo tranny are as follows
1st = Gear-X 3.083
2nd = (EX/SI) 1.909
3rd = (VX/DX/HX) 1.172
4th = (CX 3rd) 1.066
5th = (DX/CX/VX/HX/EX/SI) .702
FD = 3.722 (96-00 cx and 96-00 hx)
My speeds for this setup: with 205/50/15 shifting at 8200RPM
1st = 49mph
2nd = 79mph
3rd = 129mph
4th = 141mph <- target trap speed
5th = 215mph (i'll never get passed 150mph though so an Mfactory might be used to replace it but we'll see)
5th gear cruising at 80mph = 3046 RPM (so a little down from the powerband but it wotn be as loud)

Same here. It's the massive URL that was supposed to be in a quote, but the end is missing the "[/QUOTE" part and just left one end bracket instead.
