Default Welding stainless steel w/ Solar Flux

I know quite a few people come on here asking about backpurging and I'll mention using Solar Flux every now and then but haven't seen any pictures of it being used so I figured I'd post some up.

Solar Flux is silica based, and when heat is applied to it it turns into glass. When you buy it, it is a powder and you mix it with acetone or brake cleaner and it'll form a paste. I typically buy the empty pint sized paint cans w/ lids at Home Depot and a bristle type brush to mix/apply it. I'd only recommend using Solar Flux on a turbo-back exhaust because there is always a chance of the glass on the backside of the weld falling off and causing damage to something spinning at 10,000 rpms + .

On with the pics - 2.5" 304 Stainless w/ a 309L filler, Lincoln Precision TIG 375 w/ max amps set to 37, 100% argon at 25 flow, gas lense w/ a #7 cup, red 3/32" tungsten -

I've always wondered about that stuff. Is it easy to clean off?

Why not just get set up to backpurge?

Backpurging takes longer and costs more. You can't really clean it off since most of the welds would be unreachable from the backside once welded, that's why I recommend using it only on turbo-back exhausts (or n/a).

Looks good, a friend told me about this particular product and what it's uses are for. Seems like it works very well since it would cost a pretty penny trying to backpurge it 100%.

Back purging A bottle of gas is much cheaper than a turbo or a motor

I've used it a few times. It was recommended to me to try mixing it with HEET. The inside of the tubes seemed to be alot less clumpy when finished.

Any better interior closeups? Unfortunately the only times I have used solar flux it was in a long length of tube that I didn't want to wait to purge (300+ feet, takes a while to purge )

Is it possible to get it comparable weld to backpurging if you mix it with HEET?
