coolant disposal / used coolant disposal
I tried a search using the terms "used coolant" "coolant disposal" and "used coolant disposal" in both recent and archived and came up w/ nothing.. I'm trying to do whats right environmentally and for the safety of animals in my neighborhood and the ocean/environment so please don't say "pour it down the storm drain" or something like that... these are hazardous materials...
anyway I called up the local Kragen Autoparts and Autozone near me that I always go to and they said they only take used motor oil (which is where I take my used motor oil for recycling) ... where am I supposed to PROPERLY dispose of old/used coolant that I drain/flush out of my car? I think my city has a hazardous material dump once in a while for household chemicals, paint, etc... but thats only like once a month or once every few months or something like that... is there any place I can take it to that will dispose of my used coolant properly w/o a charge or anything?

Rainmaker: ted dansen? I'll try that number. .thanks
vimsem: aight next time I fill up I'll ask the owner if I can bring in fluids for him to dispose of properly for me.. I go to the same station all the time so I hope he doesnt charge..
Teken: I don't think I've been in a Walmart in my life.. don't think theres one near me.. not sure.. any1 else know any so cal locations? I see Target and Kmart around but not walmart...
anyway thanks for all your input.. I'm just tryin to dump it legally in a way that won't harm the environment, our drinkin water/soil, or animals, etc..
edit: I'm assuming those places will take brake fluid and tranny fluids also (I hope so).. cuz my garage is starting to fill up w/ used coolant, brake fluid, tranny fluid, from doin maintenance on my cars, my friends and familys cars.. I was gong to wait for a hazardous material dumping day w/ the local sanitation dept.. but I have a couple 1 gallon milk cartons full of fluids and I just dumped 6 - 1 gallon milk cartons of motor oil at Kragen yesterday Lolz..

I just use the dump tank behind our Honda dealership. They usually have disposal tanks for every kind of fluid.
Socal might be a different case tho and they might not want to leave the tanks in an open-access area.
And, what about Autozone? Or whatever chain store you guys have....Pepboys I believe.

the chain stores (kragen and autozone) only take used motor oil.. I haven't tried pep boys.. anyway I went to http://www.cleanup.org you can go there and enter your zip code and it will tell you what places near you will take what fluids.. I found that Jiffy lube which isn't that far from me will take used motor oil, coolant, tranny fluid, and oil filters... it doesn't list brake fluid but I dont see why they wouldn't... I'll call them up tomorrow..

here's something to ponder about...
Which is more toxic, Drano or antifreeze?

not the sink. the sink and toilet end up at different locations.
Trust me, drano is just as, if not more toxic than antifreeze.
