Ebay turbo kit
So my buddy just bought a turbo kit off ebay for 800 bucks (looks like is all the parts, turbo, intercooler, piping, oil lines, MBC...etc), he also bought an e-manage to tune it. I just want to know how long would you expect a setup like this to last on a VERY conservative tune? i will be the one tuning it and yes, i know, the setup is really dumb but hey, its not my car. Ive never tuned a honda before, but ive tuned many subarus, what are some common tuning issues with turbo'd h22? When the turbo blows up (its obviously a t3/t4 knock off) i dont want my buddy thinking it was the tune. Thanks.
Why would he automatically assume it was the tune anyhow knowing that he got his Turbo Kit off Ebay?? Its doomed either way. Your responsible partially no matter what LOL
You'll have to read up on E-manage. I've never dealt with E-manage.
The reading should be easy to find either by googling or by using Honda-Tech's search engine. I would start in archived information under Honda Prelude. Or even search the Forced Induction forum.

i knw notin about turbos... and just in case anyone reads this,,,,are Ebay turbos good? i knw their cheap.,, but would they work if installed and tuned properly???? sorry if im not helping, but just would like to knw.. thanks!
Best idea is to put together your own setup buying parts individually. The kits are over priced and have a huge markup for being packaged together (set up)
Ebay turbo parts are ****...if you would have checked the Forced Induction forum you could have saved yourself $800. Have fun with the Ebay paperweights and the headaches over the coming month(s)

Might last 6 months.
H22s blow ringlands before most anything else.

The car will become a ticking time bomb with a junk turbo kit. The parts are so unreliable that any number of things could go wrong unpredictably and unexpectedly.
I will also vouch for the low quality of the ebay kits. One guy here in GA has an Integra with a similar kit. About 2 months of about 7 psi and the turbo comes apart.

this one does look decent though.

HA. I like their first bullet point: "Turbonetics Turbo T3/T4 S-H S2.63--Run your car HARD and don't worry about the turbo! It's TURBONETICS!"
I don't know why, but that line just reads really funny to me...It's almost like they read what people have to say in forums about Ebay items and try to through in a line of quality assurance to downplay the negative hype on Ebay turbos.

hey, this is my first post as a member here...I've been over at hondahookup since May on their forums, but I wanted more...anyway, I know the turbo kits are junk off of ebay, but is there anything good about them? For example, if you get a real name brand, lets say a Greddy one, and replace the ebay one with it, would this fix the problem, or would the other components break too? just wondering...I still would never get one...JRSC FTW!
Oh, I know the "golden rule" lol, which goes hand in hand with "you get what you pay for": "if it's expensive it's fast and reliable, if it's cheap, its slow and reliable, and if it's cheap and fast its very unreliable."
I was just wondering if anybody has done it, because If you use basic components (i.e. oil lines, tubing, etc from ebay, and buy quality parts where the most stress is (turbo, BOV, I/C, wastegate, etc.) you could probably save some money (if u find a way to resell the things u dont use) - and maybe get the same reliability out of it.
I dunno, its obviously more worth it to just screw researching and buy a kit straight up from turbonetics or greddy, i'm just screwin around with the idea.

i wouldnt say its the power that kills them. I would say that its because they are thin with hardly any support for the heavy turbo and end up breaking with the engine jolts.

how well do these ebay manifolds hold up at conservative boost (8 psi)?</TD></TR></TABLE>
Yeah, it's not the amount of psi that affects the manifold as much as it is the heat. Granted at lower boost you will probably produce less heat, but then that also dependson how good your tune is. It's the constant extreme heat cycles coupled with the cheap material and the weight of the turbo hangin off of it.
Some people build braces and their OBX manifolds last a long time.

we made 450 whp on a b series ebay turbo kit. car felt great. compressor wheel broke in peices about a week later though..... got a new turbo and all was good. then again i've had others that lasted for a very long time. i think its just if you get lucky then you get a good turbo. the manifold and all other peices seem to be holding up fine though. we just had a problem with the actual turbo.

If you get a bottom-of-the-barrel cheapo ebay kit it will be pretty crappy compared to a full-race kit or a peiced-together with good high end parts.
Compare a LoveFab manifold to an OBX/SS Autochrome and there will be a dramatic difference in quality.
