Racing harness on stock seats
Do I need to get a roll bar behind them to use a harness or will the stock seats take the weight of a driver on a closed course/daily driving ?

to that question... HELL No.
most racing harnesses (5 and 6 points) are meant to keep you firmly in your seat in an accident.
OEM 3point based seatbelts are meant to keep you in your seat, but, allow you to tuck, in an accident.
If you rollover in your car with a stock seatbelt, your OEM seatbelt will allow you to curl forward and avoid the crushing roof...
If you rollover in your car without a rollbar/cage and a 5point, you can't move to avoid the crushing roof.
Just food for thought. I would only use a harness without a rollbar for autocross...that's it.
I agree to this comment, but I have also heard of these belts saving peoples lives. This guy took his type R out for a drive, and got in an accident. I'm not sure about the details, but if he had been using his stock seatbelts, he would have been dead. The harness saved his life.

I use to own a 89 Si that I use to have 5 point racing harnesses installed in...without a rollbar/cage. I got involved in a t-bone accident (i t-boned a truck)... i was SOOOOO happy i had those on, as my head would have been embedded in the steering wheel if i didn't have those on.
Now, if i ever got into a roll-over accident, i would have surely perished...
Bottomline, if you want to use 5-point harnesses... just spend $300 on a solid rollbar (whether it's autopower, kirkey, or custom)... it's just a smarter idea.

To the original question, a harness should not be used without rollover protection and a helmet, period. That's not to say that you can't do it, but if you're concerned at all about safety, do it right. Roll bars are amazingly cheap compared to a lot of parts people buy for their cars every day (cheaper than a good header, cheaper than good tires, cheaper than a good cd player, etc.).

The helmet is there to protect your head, even with a roll bar/cage. With the cage, you can obviously hit your head on the halo. With a roll bar, the halo is not a factor, but the roof is going to come down more and likely meet your head.
If you're going to strap yourself into a 5-6 point harness, you need a helmet and padded rollover protection.
