Who want's to test their car in the Wind Tunnel?
Hi, I am setting up some dates in the A2 wind tunnel in Mooresville, NC to wind tunnel test your car and up to ten configurations at 85 mph. Each car will have a total of two hours in the tunnel and this includes the 10 minutes to install the car on the balance and the ten minutes to remove it. I am guessing we can test up to 10 different setups including airdam heights, splitter designs, wing angles and mounting locations, trick side mirrors, radiator block off, wheel sizes, ect. I would like to get at least four different cars to test and up to six total. It would also be nice to get cars with the same wheelbase so that downtime in the tunnel is kept to a minimum.
If I get enough interested people, we can book the time for January. The cost for two hours in the tunnel will be $950 and I will be on hand to help each person with questions and setup. Please, if you are interested, let's get going with it.
Oh, you will be surprised how much better you can make your car handle and minimize drag by running these tests in the wind tunnel.

The other thing is that this will be part of a Sport Compact Car article I'll be writing so if you want your car featured, this will be a good time to get it shown. I'm trying to line up some companies who would like to test some parts like wings and mounting positions. So please, if you are interested in maybe getting a free wing from a manufacturer and also having your car wind tunnel tested please feel free to contact me.
What exactly gets measured in a wind tunnel test:
Drag and Drag Coefficient (Cd)
Lift and Lift Coefficient for total car (CL), front (Clf) and rear (Clr)
Side Force and Coefficient (Cs)
So wind tunnel testing will help to determine the best package of aero parts to balance your car. You can find out what works and what doesn't. You can tests various wings and wing angle of attack (AoA) to find out how much downforce is created at what expense in drag. No more guessing, since a wind tunnel is where the actual force of the wind can be measured. Like I said, the air blows over your car at 85 mph which is plenty high enough to determine these important forces on your car.
Looking forward to seeing the data.Johnny Mac.

The wind tunnel testing will take place in Mooresville, North Carolina. I'll be flying in before hand to help set up each car for the tests so that time in the tunnel isn't wasted. We want to test as much as possible to see what works and what doesn't.

Damn, if I had <U>any</U> aero on my car, that would be awesome. Also living about 1500 miles closer would help too.......

Yeah, I'm hoping to eventually build a wind tunnel here in California for full size cars. But for now, I'll have to fly across the country to test.

I'm surprised there isn't one more local to you. Are they really that rare?
Also, you might want to post this up on NASAForums, especially the AI/AIX areas, I know those guys have similar open aero stuff, and definitely play around with it, at least on the East Coast.

There are some other wind tunnels, some only for scale models and very few will allow us to test the actual car. The other tunnels are prohibitively expensive for the club racer to the tune of $1500+ an hour. So you seel, this is a great opportunity to test reasonably inexpensively.

Well, if you happened to be anywhere near Ottawa, Canada, we have a great windtunnel for full size cars at NRC. Nudge-nudge wink wink. Many Nascar teams can be seen rolling in and out of the lot. And it is only 10 minutes from my garage.
Damn I wish I was in the South East US right now. Can't wait to see the article.

Johnny Mac-
I want to get into sport compact pretty bad! I am running a H1 Integra Type R with a K20 and a aero package. I run the APR GTC-200 Wing and a Splitter design by Kiwi and special projects motorsports. I am trying to also run this car in a couple World Challenge Events so all the extra help i can get will be worth it.
950 per person or for a set amount of time? A friend of mine is in NC who i know would love to get in on this he is running a H1 EK.

Yeah, the $950 covers two hours in the wind tunnel to try as many configurations as possible. I will be available beforehand to help maximize your time in the tunnel so that more can be tested in the same amout of time.

Damn, thats pretty cool. I suppose thats an more convenient location for NASCAR teams than trying to get into the Langley full-scale tunnel.

yeah, there's still some spots open. It should be interesting when we get enough people in so we can begin discussing what each person would like to test. I have some ideas that can help generate some more downforce, but depending on which cars are tested we can then formalize a testing plan.
Remember, the actual data determined from the wind tunnel tests does not have to be made public. I can publish trends and percentage improvements so that any data you want to keep private will be kept that way.

EDIT: Don, nevermind. Disregard what I said below. My mouth spoke before looking in my checking account.
Don, if you are interested in splitting the bill, I might have some aero stuff I want to test out. Since we both have the same chassis, it would seem like a waste to swap cars in and out of the tunnel when we both have the same car. Let me know if you are interested.
...that is, if it's ok with Johnny to do that.

in for data! and
to SCC and Johnny Mac. too bad i'll probably have to wait for the March 08 issue of SCC to read all about it

</TD></TR></TABLE> Damnit. Splitting the bill would be sweet.
Anyway, I'm currently talking with Mr.E.G., Kiwi from Special Project Motorsports and Geoff at Full-Race on aero parts for the EG.
SPM has an aero package for the integra that may be adaptable to the EG according to Kiwi.
Geoff said their civic aero project is on permanent hold as of right now due to lack of interest and a flux of new orders for their turbo kits after sema.
Mr.E.G. has some ideas I'm going to work with him on in the next few weeks.
For the wind tunnel cost, I may have to give up a couple track days in next years budget. But it would be worth it get the car dialed in rather then playing around for countless sessions trying to track test it.
Johnny Mac, do you have a deadline date for getting people signed up?

Johnny,
I am in Ottawa as well. The NRC has various wind tunnels for aircraft work, and one very large low speed (in aircraft terms) one used my many race-car teams. I believe they are in the process of installing a rolling road as they have had to do some maintenance to replace the main 10,000 lb bearing! I can put you in touch with a friend of mine, Dr. Kevin Cooper who is now a retired scientist who used to work there. He is the current North American rep for the Pininfarina wind tunnel in Italy and I se him at the track a lot. He drives an NSX. Last time I talked to him he was thinking about doing an article in a car mag about some aero stuff, similar to your project.
