Default 89 Cluster into 91

I've tried to search.....Didn't find much...I have an 89 cluster with a tach....My STD 91 hatch has no tach, and I'd rather just have an entire cluster with the tach than to buy a huge external tach.

So if there is a write up anywhere for this, or if anyone can instruct me how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it is even possible. Just figured I'd see if it was...before I went to the junkyard and got one from a 90-91.

iirc the wiring is a little different. you need to use the 90-91 brackets, and cover to make it fit.

http://www.crxresource.org/mod...d=124

there's pictures of the 88-89(milky plugs), and 90-91(gray plugs) and what the wires do.

the blue plugs are for a newer year civic so ignore those. and compare where the placement of the wires are in different location, but have the same use. so you just need to move wires around.

Thanks for the link. I haven't had my 91 cluster off in awhile, but I swear that there were 3 plugs...I see there is a difference in the wires...but I don't know what to do with the one left over...

I think I'm going to hit up the junk yard and look for a cluster I think...seems to be too much of a pain.

thanks again for the info.

as far as i know the connections stayed the same from year to year, the only thing that changed was the style of the cluster, you need 88-89 brackets and the 88-89 cluster cover.

if you look at my link the color AND what the wire does stays the same, but where the wire is in different spot.

look at plug E(90-91) and plug C(88-89)
second wire is High beam for 90-91, and 88-89 is driver seatbelt. now look at plug D for 88-89. second wire is high beam same color as 90-91 but on a different plug.

so you WILL have to rewire them.

I'm about 99% sure about there being one extra plug on the back of my 91 cluster. I'm going to go out and look within the hour. If there is...how do I go about that? That plug was just useless? It had to of done something.

Just to get things straight...I want to make my 91 F and E clips look like the 88's C and D

There is a third plug....its a little blue one. Has two wires going into it..a YELLOW and a YELLOW/BLACK. What would I do with this one?
