So I'm riding back to work after lunch and am stopped at a traffic light behind a few cars in the on the far left side of the left lane when all of a sudden I hear a slight squeal of tires to directly my right...so I instantly look over and am staring at an older lady through her drivers side window of her dodge ram.
I guess she did not see me until the last second and narrowly avoided running into me by going halfway into the right hand lane.
As I looked over, she grinning and shaking her head...like "whoops my bad!" I'm thinking WTF, I could have been crushed and/or possibly dead. I stare at her for a good 10 seconds, shake my head and ride off.
Now typically, I'll watch my mirrors to make sure people stop behind me but I guess I was distracted for the moment and wasn't paying attention.
Serious reminder that you should always assume you are invisible when riding a motorcycle. Be careful out there guys.
Now the mandatory MSPaint diagram:

I assume you are the blue one and she was the green one. Wow, that would make ya sh*t your pants. I usually look in my mirrors until I see a car come up behind me, and I make sure they look like they are going to slow down in time. I always leave an "out" in front or to the side of me, juuuuuust in case I need to get out of the way.

happened to me on the freeway, lady must not have checked completely but just about ran me off the road, she got the same look in her eyes as soon as she saw me. in the moment I just reacted and swerved and sped up as to move out of the way but thinking back it's almost surreal how deadly it could have been.

You should have continued concentrating on the road ahead instead of diverting your attention to someone who obviously doesn't care.
This type of thing happens all the time - avoid it and move on.

this is another example why you always try and ride faster than the flow of traffic, being stuck next to a lady that grins and says my bad is not my idea of fun... look ahead, flow faster than traffic and keep going.
I think some of you missed the part where he was stopped at a traffic light.
Did you have your brake light on? One thing my MSF instructor stressed was, unless theres a car already stopped behind you, to always have a hand or foot on the brake to shine that brake light and make yourself visible. But it doesn't help when theres still complete idiots out on the rode...
Anyways, glad you're safe

You should've gotten up along side the red car. That way they get hit and even if you still get hit as a result of the car moving, etc. they still absorbed the majority of the impact energy.

If he saw it coming, yes. Otherwise, in many states that is illegal to do at a traffic light.

Hmm true. How much would it suck if you lived in a state where you could not split lanes....? I wouldn't even ride on the street.

It's pseudo-legal in IL, meaning that there's no laws on the books on whether or not you can do it. However, I just looked into it and saw this...
http://www.ilga.gov/legislatio...GA=94
I noticed they snuck in a helmet requirement also. This wouldn't bother me, as I always wear mine, but I know it'd upset a lot of people.
What does "Session Sine Die" mean? Anyways, IL drivers don't even understand the concept, so here it's probably more dangerous to split lanes than to not to...

wait what.... its legal to split in traffic now? ... thats news to me. That could have saved me quite a bit of time on 290 going to the gf's apartment in the middle of rush hour.

over spring break, i was in my moms pacifica and a person ran a red light and t-boned me as i crossed the intersection. the 20,000 dollar car was totalled but i was ok. i realized i would either be very close to dead or dead if i was on my bike. still spooks the shat out of me and thats not a bad thing.

Damn, glad you are alright. Always try to look both ways, even if you have the greenlight. (Especially if you are on a bike.)
Were you the first to cross the intersection?

with most sport bikes the brake light will only light up if you are using the front brake and not appear if you are using the rear.

Damn dude I'll take your word for it, but I just don't see how the feds would force bikes to have all these lame laws and then let them get buy without a pressure switch for the rear brake.....
On my bike the rear lights it up but not the front since its a brembo MC and I haven't bothered with fitting an aftermarket switch. lol

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out iLude. I only stared at the lady because traffic was stopped.
Yes, my brake light was on as I step on the rear brake when I'm at a stop out of habit. I think I'll adopt the technique of blinking the brake light as mentioned above.

Your wrong right there. Here in california, its legal to lane split. Here's a link to a news channel in san diego reporting on lane splitting.

and here's another link you guys can look to find if what legal and what's not in your state.

Yeah man something's not right there. Our safety inspection REQUIRES that the rear brake light go on when you hit the rear brake.
