How can I remove the climate control console thing?
i'm talking about the thing in the center that has the 2 air vents, and controls the heat/AC. I poped the r.defrost and hazard light buttons and took those screws out and tried pulling the unit out but it seemed to be stuck somewhere near the bottom. y's it stuck? is there a nother screw or wiring harness that i need to undo? if so, how do i get to it?
1) Pry the 2 buttons out with a screwdriver. (Hazards, defrost)
2) There is a screw behind each of those. (remove them)
3) Should be able to move the assembly about a good 5 inches or so.
4) Disconnect the fan and the temp control cable from the rear.
5) You can pull the entire assembly out.

I'm good till step 4. i cant reach around to the back of the unit to unplug the wiring harness. i even tried taking out my head unit and reaching up through there but it didn't work. How do get it unpluged?
step four is a PITA. I just did it today. I used a flathead, and poked at the connector from below. I laid on my back to get a better view and poked the part of the connector that make's the snap sound when pluged in.
btw, there are two connectors behind the console, and one cable under the glove compartment (it's like a bike cable).

i believe you do have to take out the radio because it does look like the center console thing hooks onto the stock radio. but maybe i am wrong.
i did this because i put red LED's behind all of my vents and the only way to get behind the HVAC unit is to take it out. and while i had it out, i took it all apart and made the bulbs red, so now all the controls glow amber at night.
is there any whay to make it glow red?? cause i got my guage cluster to light up red. now all i need is the clock and the ac unit.
If it's so hard to take out, how much harder is it to put back in? Just asking because a light bulb is out back there and I do not know if it is worth it to try and take it out. TIA
2 of my light bulbs went out too. on and off. If I got to pepboy to buy replacements, what is the # for those bulbs? for example, the Brake bulbs are 1157, and these are??????
Not sure. The light in my emergency button broke. The light is very very small. I went to kragen and autozone and they both did not have anything even close. Had to go to the dealer and fork out 7 bucks. The light bulb is the size of the lead at the end of a pencil!!
the code for the small ones are like 74 i think...you totally got ripped off for 7 bux bro, sorry man. you can get them at like autozone for a dollar...2 at the most.
Red leds and comes out amber??? I would think it would be more of a pink. Did you remove the blue stuff from the buttons?
how do i make the AC control unit light up red?? do i just need to stick red lights in it? also how can i make the clock red?? i have tried lens repair and monocoat....and they both look like crap.
Yes it's 247K but that is KMs. That's about 150K miles. It is defintely running well as the original motor was replaced at 200K KM with a JDM GSR motor with 10K KM and a type r tranny.... That means at least another 200K KM if the body lasts!!!
You guys are removing it from the WRONG END.
Look under the dash just to the right of the console (kinda where the rear of the radio goes..) there will be the heater contro and AC evaporator there... move the lever and see where it connects to? Just slide the loop off the stud (thats at the end of the cable)
dont pull out the cluster (that will put unnecessary tension on the cable)

no, i didn't use the LED's to make the controls light up amber. i put them inside of the air vents. i have red LED's in all the vents, and a red neon under each side of the dash. it acutually looks prety cool.
so does anybody know if the bulbs for the actual center console are available in red at autozone or anywhere else so we can kind of get the red/amber look on our center consoles? if we could then it would look really nice i think. My friend has the new 2002 a4 and the interior lightin of this center console lights up all red and its very clean.

From the pics it looks like I am pulling at it but I did release the cable from below otherwise I would not be able to pull it out so far. I just did not want to pull it out even more as I don't like guiding the cable back through the other stereo cables that are in the way. If I only pull it out partially after releasing the cable from below, I don't have to spend extra time routing the whole cable back so it doesn't mess up any other wiring. Not alot of room back there.
As for the bulbs, I believe they are custom sized and I could not find them anywhere so I went to the dealer to purchase them. They are about $7 CDN each. To get a red color, you could try putting on a rubber cover over the bulb. The bulbs came with a blue rubber cap that I removed as it would shine blue but did not give enough light. I believe some people have put led's in the climate control but I do not know how they did as the bases of the bulbs are custom and not available in LED. Honda does not make one standard size of little bulb, there are thousands of these in different sizes. You would think they would somehow standardize on several sizes but they don't seem to.
