Emergency track pad recommendation (Autozone etc)??
OK...so I put the brand new spec Cobalt GT-Sport on the car last night...and they are grinding constantly. Weird...long story short, I ended up trying a whole bunch of **** and put the old pads back on (old GT-Sport) and the problem is gone.
My question is...I have to leave for HDPE tomorrow morning, is there a decent track pad that Autozone/Advance/PepBoyz will stock for the ITR that will hold up to a track day? I want something that will BRAKE not just fade and cry....any recommendations appreciated.

i dont think you're going to find much in way better than the gt sports at autozone. What about just getting a set of off-track pads from autozon, incase you fry the pads on track?
When you say the new gt sports are grinding constantly....what do you mean? you hear them against the rotor slightly? I dont think thats all too uncommon. Have you bed them in yet?

Are they the new carbon-ceramic models? I just got a brand new set of GT-Sports as well (they're silver, with gold metal things embedded over the outside of the pad, not blue like the original GT-Sports). I haven't put them on yet but that sounds weird...
I dont know any good readily available pad that would work in the meantime though, hopefully someone has some info.

Well, the old GTsports have like 20% pad left, Im a bit hesitant to use them, but I might. The new GTsports (yes like you describe Koala) make a slight squaking/grinding sound ALL the time, it is a very similar sound to what you would expect them to make when braking (some noise), but it happens ALL the time. Its weird. I bed them about 50% and then got concerned about the noise.

Finish bedding them in, drive to the event, inspect closely, see what is going on then decide.

the ceramic Nascar selects are the best you can get from any of those stores....They are probably the only pad that will hold up.
do a couple 100+ to 0 stops and see if its still making the noise.
My thoughts are its something in the compound. I don't understand how the noise could be coming from anywhere but between the pad and rotor itself. If j00 leavin for HPDE though i can understand you not wanting to scar the rotor or fugg the pad up.

even if you use the old pads - 20% left is plenty for the weekend in most cases. I used to run those through an entire season.
I'm guessing the new ones may just have a higher metallic component that is touching the rotors.
??Did you put new rotors on with the new pads? If not, your old ones are not 'true' anymore & the new pads are screaching against them??
No biggy, just one of them things. That's why I had a set of rotors for the track pads & one for the street pads (when I used to switch
)

Good looking out for the community though.

Hmmm... .... Make sure that its not something dumb like the caliper rubbing on the splash shield. I've had this happen on my beater after replacing pads. Had to hammer a bit on that shield...
I know jetydosa is gone, but...

I wouldn't chance it. I generally get about 500 track miles to a set of GT Sport fronts, and replace them when they're down to about 3-4 mm (4 mm is around 20% left). If they're at 4 mm, I can see how they could be down to bare metal before the end of an HPDE event, where you generally drive 125-200 track miles. Also, I avoid using those last few mm of pad thickness, because there is less pad material to act as an insulator, and the caliper and fluid will get hotter as a result.
