new and fun oil leak!!! (maybe oil cooler o-ring/balance shaft seals??)
hi, don't wanna sound like I'm ranting (probably will anyway) but my car seems to develop new and interesting things for me to fix every week
. I noticed my car was slowly dripping oil behind the head/block (makes a small puddle on the block) where the AAAAA code is for the bearings. It looked like it was dripping oil from the valvecover/cam seals - pull the valve cover and notice the corner was leaking a lil bit, threw some honda bond there and where the cam caps go. I put a new pcv valve in because the old one was clogged (even brake cleaner didn't help), plus I noticed some oil buildup there aswell. Fire it up, seems good, go for a nice long drive and everything was sweet. Now this morning I fire the car up, noticed the drip leak was back, this time with a vengance. I had to shut the car off because I could hear something spraying out, I pop the hood and see that there was oil spraying from somewhere, got on the hood, back of the valvecover, all over the half-shaft, everywhere.
I was searching some stuff and noticed some people were talking about the oil-cooler o-ring leaking and causing a bad leak like that. I also read up about the balance-shaft seals, but that wouldn't be visible like that (I have the upper/lower timing covers in). I am also thinking it could be the oil pressure gauge line, but thats a copper line that came installed when I got the car, never leaked before, but I guess it would spray like that if there was a problem.
I'm just trying to figure out what could have gone wrong now, seems like theres a family of gremlins living under my intake manifold or sumthin. Would a oil-cooler o-ring audibly spray oil out like it was its job? I wouldn't doubt it, but its really wierd. Anyways, sorry for the rant, I just wanna drive the thing again (and its starting to get nice outside finally

I was just checkin more stuff on the oil cooler o-ring, seems like the culprit. I might have to take a day offa class to do it. I just hope thats gonna be it for a while, full time work n school doens't leave much time for me to be fixin stuff lol.
I wonder what the part # is for the o-ring, ah, I'll just find out tomorrow. I'll (hopefully) have a update soon w/ the part # if anyone wants it.

thanks Hawkze, looks like the same procedure as changing the b18c oil cooler o-ring when I was rebuilding it for my teg. I had the engine out, but shouldn't be that much of a difference (get under car, remove oil filter, unbolt the stud/bolt thing, move cooler out of the way, remove/scrape old o-ring off and put new one in w/ some hondabond to hold it up, reinstall everything and cross fingers while starting car).

Ok, fixed the o-ring - not as bad as it seems (just jack the car up pretty high).
The old o-ring was shot, split on the top side, flat and felt like hard plastic (I'll put pics l8r lol).
-remove oil filter
-use a 30mm (extension optional) to remove the stud bolt holding the cooler in
-you can move the oil cooler out of the way (its held up by hoses)
-the o-ring sits on the back of the cooler, use a screwdriver (I had to anyway) to pop it out
-clean the back of the block (or in my case; intake manifold, firewall, axles, strut towers, steering rack, while ur in there)
-throw some honda-bond in the groove and set the new o-ring in (had to work it in a bit but it works)
-carefully put the oil cooler + stud back in
-hand thread it then tighten it up w the 30mm
-put the oil filter on and top off
-fire up and make sure theres no leaks
-celebrate w/ a ice-cold corona (edit, with lime)
hope that helps

Our preludes are getting old, but I'd still rather fix things from time to time than have a car payment for something newer that I don't even like as much. Look at it this way, once you fix the problem, it should be good for another 10-15 years

i know this is a dumb question but to remove the oil cooler O ring in my 93 sr engine would i have to drain the oil(im assuming yes)?
No ....just take the filter off, take the 30mm bolt /nut out, remove oil cooler ,remove old crusty o-ring,install new one with a dab of oil to hold it in place...tighten 30mm nut back down , install filter.....
