Need Urgent Help! Car wont start!
As stated my car wont start. Its a 98 v6. Problem is it wont turn and it just clicks. My guess is the starter? Anyone care to confirm or have suggestions? It just happened and there hasnt been any symptoms thus far.
TIA!

are you able to check your battery voltage?
it could be starter or battery, when the battery gets low enough it wont even turn, you'll just hear a clicking which eventually will turn into nothing but a single click each time you try to turn it on.

Ill check that. I did have a problem with my battery the other week. Car was weak like the battery was low. When I took off the positive the car made a gasp noise from the intake and then it started right up after i plugged the postive back on. I thought it was my alternator that went out but it wasnt.
Ill try it again to see what happens. Thanks for the quick response.
Oh and this just happened right after I turned off the car. I had to move my car so i jumped back in to turn it on and it wouldnt.

wait, while the car was running you disconnected the positive battery lead and the car acted like it was going to die?
your alternator is going out if your car dies while the battery is disconnected. check the voltage with the car running and with it off, if your voltage reads low then your alternator is going out, you should read 14.2 volts when your alternator is working properly.
you should read about 12 volts when you test the battery with the car off, plus or minus .2 or so.

no, I think he's referring to his problem from the other week with his battery. After he had disconnected and reconnected the battery, for some reason the car started back up.

that's bizare.
just check voltages with the car running and with it off, 14.2 is the optimal power you should be reading with the car running, 12 plus or minus .2 with it off.

Ok i think its my battery. For some reason its not getting enough power I guess. I just jumped it with my sisters car and its the battery.
I dont have a crazy system. Just a DVD/Nav eclipse unit and HID's but I dont think that should do any harm. Alternator was swapped out early winter because it went out and replaced with a used TL Denso unit. Never had a problem til last week when the car felt weak. After I unplugged the positive while car was off and reconnected it came alive like nothing was wrong. I still dont know what that gasping sound was.
If the alternator was going shouldnt it be making some whining noise? Thats what my earlier unit did after all the dash lights came on.

you first want to check the battery voltage like stated already. If you don't have a meter, take it out and go to AutoZone or someother parts store and have them check it. If it checks fine, go back and check the starter.
First hook a meter up to the negative of the battery and then to the blk/wht wire running to the starter. Put the meter against the windshield so you can see it while you try to start the car, or what the meter as someone else turns the key. When you turn the key you should see voltage at the meter. If so, it's most likely the starter. Take it out and have it double checked at the parts store. If not, check the blk/wht wire for breaks.
You can also sorta test for a bad blk/wht wire by bypassing it with a jumper wire between the positive battery terminal and the solenoid (where the blk/wht wire connects). Make sure the car is in nuetral, connect the jumper to the positive and then touch the other end to the solenoid terminal. The starter should crank the engine. If not, it's most likely the starter. Take it out and have it tested at the parts store. If it does, check the blk/wht wire.
edit:
nm, looks like you got it.

Thanks.
Im gonna take it to Autozone to confirm that its my battery. If it is my battery why would it not be getting enough power? Theres nothing that could be stealing power.

whenever I have a dead alternator I replace the battery at the same time because the core of the battery is often depleted and will eventually fail to store enough power to start the car.
If you didn't replace the battery when the alternator went out, it may have just been time for the battery to die.

Ok so The alternator is reading 11's and not 12's. I replaced the battery. Will my battery eventually die out since my alternator is not doing 12's?

Yes.
Yes.
Yeah it could be a matter of days before you see it again. But if your alternator is
giving that kind of voltage your battery will not keep it's charge for very long. This was
the probable cause of your battery going out in the first place.
