Default So I'm coming from the VW scene and have LOTS of questions! (Long)

hopefully i am posting this in the right forum but basically i just bought an EG and have some questions.

first a quick history, i bought a 92 16v GTi 10years ago and its seen a few different set ups in the last decade. all motor 16v to 16v turbo and is currently fitted with a 192whp 3liter VR6. its been my pride possession for 10 years now. unfortunately every bit of experience with vw motors i have is that of unreliability. from my 16v to my wife's passat V6 to the "bullet proof" VR6, these motor give nothing but grief. as much love as i have for vw's enough is enough.
so we dumped the passat and bought a V6 accord which has been great! this ultimately lead me to the decision to give up on vw and buy a Honda for myself. we are starting a family and trying to buy a house. i needed something i could build and beat on without breaking every time i turn around.

so i bought a clean unmolested 92 si hatch and I'm wondering which motor to put into it. before i get flamed, i DID research and educate myself as much as i could on the different options. i wasn't able to really reach a conclusion on which way to go.

i am basically looking for what ever is fast, reliable and cheap to maintain. i want something i can beat on daily. basically i want to build it and forget about it. i don't mind spending to money at first to do it right as long as i know it will last without me having to tinker with it all the time. my GTi is basically a 13second car. which motor is going to get me there reliably all motor? i have ruled out the the Kseries because its just too expensive.but what about the b's and H22's?

thanks alot

Hey man. Going from VS to Honda is pretty brave. Im sure your VW buddies will be giving you hell for awhile.

For you hatch, I would say a b18c. They usually run for ever and are pretty fun. also congrats on finding a clean 92 Si.

You cant have.. cheap, reliable, and fast. You have to pick 2.

If you want something kind of trouble free, then b series for sure. If you drop a b16 in, your going to be disappointed over time simply due to the lack of torque. A jdm GSR/SIR-G swap (b18c) with an LSD trans will run you about $3k, and its pretty much a bolt in swap. Everything is plug and play, you just need to run a knock sensor wire all the way to the ecu.

That swap with some basic suspension add ons, like struts, decent coilovers, an integra rear sway bar and you've got yourself a fun ride.

Suggestion: Spend some cash and get a good alarm with paging and internet tracking. Like the new clifford alarms. And make sure you hide it well - like in your dash somewhere. And hide the siren in your fender or under your windshield cowl.
Put a couple of kill switches in - one for the ignition switch, and one for the fuel pump. And disable your interior door locks. People break into these cars by popping the door glass with a screwdriver and reaching in and unlocking your car. Its pretty f'ed up.

btw.. dont listen to that asshat about your GTI. Those are nice rides - I wouldnt mind having one myself. Welcome to the H community.

this forum is not anything like the VW forum you came from, as you might have figured out by the asshat that responded first.

A stock B18C won't get you into the 13's. You would have to buy the swap (3,000) and then build it, which will be another few thousand. (probably close to a K swap) H swaps are ok, but their big and heavy, and don't clear your hood (at least from my limited knowledge on em... Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong)

Honestly, your best bet is boost. Sooo much cheaper, and more power. I built an NA engine, and if it blows up, imma just boost it. simple, cheap and easy compared to an all motor build.

Or if you dont even have a few grand just buy a d16y8 and boost it, the engine and set-up shouldnt run you more than 1500 for eveything. That is if you piece the kit together, but then you have to get it tuned, etc. I think a boosted d series is a great start with a first Honda. It will bring the VR6 memories back too

if you want cheap then d-series meets that criteria, you have a d16z6
if you want fast, then boost the D
If you want reliability get a good tune

for three grand, about the price of a b18c, you can have a built d16z6 on (easy when you're forged) and kick a stock b18c's a$$

D-series FTW

Good to hear from a fellow VW owner. I have two MKIV's myself, an '00 Jetta GLS 8v 2.0L SOHC and a '01 GTI VR6 12v 2.8L.

It's hard to make a 13 second all motor w/o really digging a hole in ur pocket.

K's on boost is a good start, but usually w/ these motors ur gonna want boost in order to get there. Yes, there are people running 9's all motor, such as Bisimoto, but those engines aren't "streetable" for all intents and purposes.

You might seriously want to look into the FI route. Getting a civic like that all motor can be difficult.

You can PM me if you have any questions.

it looks like the type r is going to be the best choice

so what will it run stock?
what kinda work will it take to be a 13second car?

i'm not exactly into drag racing but i know my GTi is about 13second territory and i just want to be as fast as it. i like beating on vettes and such

as far as the cheap- fast- reliable saying... a mildly built swaped EG is about as close as it gets. you have no idea how much money i've dumped into the vw just in repairs

and drag radials... MAYBE. high 13's if anything. LSD trans = -.5sec.

Most of the 13 sec semi stock eg's are stripped out cx or vx's. Not Si's with the extra 100+ lbs. GSR or ITR motor w/ lsd trans, a good clutch, I/H/E, and drag radials & you know what your doing behind the wheel you'll be mid-high 13's.

No LSD trans= low 14's. & on street tires= mid 14's.

Yea, because your car is a little heavier because it is a Si, you are probably going to have to go with a type r swap. That, intake, header, and exhaust, some supensions mods and good tires and you'll be way into 13 second teritory.
