How big of a difference will Si/GSR tranny in LS motor make?
I've had two friends that have had b18b/b20 motors with gsr trannys and they have mentioned that the gearing as far as 1/4mi & 0-60 really make a big difference. I have had a '90 LS a long time ago and I remember the LS gearing being rather long.
So I have made a deal this week to buy a completely bone stock '95 Integra LS off someone and the first thing I want to do is change the transmission because I do not like the gearing. I'm not trying to turn this car into a full race car or anything, I just want to be able to take off a little faster, especially since I deal with city and stop & go traffic on a daily basis. I suppose my question is, Is switching out the tranny really worth it (according to my wants) if I plan to keep the rest of the motor stock for the time being? How much of a difference (maybe in terms of 1/4mi time or 0-60) will swapping the tranny make? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Swapping to a GSR tranny would definitely get your *** moving while still maintaining good fuel economy on the highway.
The B16 tranny will really get your *** going and will make fun use of the low end torque of the B18B. However, your RPMs will be higher while cruising in any of the gears.
The GSR tranny is a compromise between quicker acceleration and fuel economy. The LS and GSR trannies share the same 1st and 2nd gears. The rest of the gears a slightly shorter than the LS. The B16 tranny has much shorter gearing from 2nd gear on.

dont get an si b16 tranny, the gears are way to close for an ls, youll max out 5th gear at like 120 mph and be cruising at like 5k + rpms on the highway.
gsr trans was nice on my ls, it was very nice on an ls with bolt ons, helped it get moving a little better. it definately felt like honda should have done that from the factory

Ive had all 3 transmission on a b18b and an SI and a GSR tranny on a b18c...SI HANDS DOWN on both setups...Who cares if you max 5th at 120 mph?? (and its actually maxed at around 125 at 7k if my memory serves....) are you trapping beyond 125 on a 7k redline?? If not...who cares
and you dont cruise at 5k+ plus...I dont know where that guy got his numbers, but they are off...

Ok... You obviously don't have any experience with it. I have a b16 Si tranny in my RS. On the highway I'm at 4300 at 80mph on stock 15s. You said you do mostly city driving, so that won't be a problem... and unless you are legit road racing, who needs to go any faster than 130 mph? The ls tranny goes up to 178 mph at 6900, but the engine doesn't have enough torque stock to spin past 130 anyway. Get an Si or ITR tranny if possible. ITR has lsd, but is otherwise identical to a b16. You won't regret it

i have more information to add to this thread: i dont give a expletive.
you dont have to believe everything i say, or anyone on here for that matter. if i believed everything i read online i would be a much stupider person. never hurts to think for yourself. i have experience with a gsr tranny on an ls motor, boosted ls motor, lsvtec and boosted lsvtec motors, along with ls tranny on an ls, boosted ls and boosted lsvtec motors. i dont have an si but ive been i cars with them and i know my personal opinion is that it is too tight gearing. thats the best any of us can offer, personal opinions. if the op wants to see it for themselves, either go find a car and take a ride or buy the **** for your own and try it. i would me a much more ignorant person (it is possible) if i didnt just get the hell out there and try **** for myself. ciao

I have a b16 tranny. It has been on a b18b, b20 and b18c. I have to say it has been the best investment that I have made. When I'm on the highway going 80mph the motor is spinning at 4300 rpm's not 5k.

Gsr tranny is a way better tranny after 3rd gear on,Ive tried both in a b18b ..b16 have quicker take off...I have a b18b on my 99 civic now wit few mods including a 99gsr tranny I can easily hit 130 mhp in the freeway without going over 6500.....I don't like my second gear though it max'd out at like 55mhp..
What about if you Turbo your LS (like I am going to) Wouldn't the LS tranny be better for it, cause of the long gears? So once your spooled up you just keep pulling!? Because say with a B16 tranny you will just spin ur tires because of the torque and low gearing.
Correct me if I am wrong with this thinking. J/W

What he said may be what he'd do...But that doesnt mean it'd be the best choice for acceleration...I dont want to get into the reasoning on why, because someone people even when faced with the numbers will not acknowledge it...But I'll leave it as this, for acceleration, all motor, boosted, bolt on....Type R/SI, GSR, LS ....Even people who have way more experience than 80% of people registered on Honda-Tech stand by that...

Thanks.

nope why would it hurt something that is built to rev? Besides fuel consumption is not affected by rpm, its based off of throttle position

if youre a bit of a ricer and like 100 rolls on public roads to 140+ then ok you may not want short gears of an SI...But if you run on the 1/4 mile on sanctioned tracks, chances are you arent trapping over 130..The SI transmission will do just fine
if you're so worried about going through the gears too quickly with a b16, get a gsr tranny. it's a nice compromise between b16 and ls tranny's. for all out acceleration the b16/itr takes the cake.

haha how else am i gonna beat up on rwd cars
power has a lot to do with tranny choice, again related to trap speed as was just mentioned. to my knowledge the best rule of thumb is to try and finish the 1/4 as high in the rpm in 4th as possible without having to shift to 5th. all of which are effected by tire size, power and transmission...
