So as many of you know, my shift cables snapped and i went through alot of grief with UPS losing my package containing the 5th gen cables that precisionh23a had sent me. Good thing he insured the package!

He overnighted me a set of 4th gen cables and a 4th gen base plate. Once i got the package today, i was a little worried about getting the plate mounted securely because it was just so much longer than the 5th gen plate and only the two back holes lined up. At the top of the plate it lined up with two unthreaded holes, my option there was to drill through the holes and through the underside of the chassis allowing me to use long bolts and two nuts to secure the top of the plate down.

I was at sears trying to pick out the right drill but after thinking about it, there was just no room to get a drill where i needed it to be. Called up anthony to see if he could give me some pointers. Told me to get some sheetmetal screws and use them to connect the base plate to the thin piece of sheetmetal on top of the chassis. So i got a drill, bit set and a 3/8" bit.

I DID NOT end up using the sheetmetal screws. In the picture below, it shows how i bolted the top part of the mount down. That is the factory bolt from the 5th gen shifter.




as you can see there is a good difference in design and size. Not to mention that the 4th gen shifter is SO much beefier than the 5th gen shifter.

theres really no reason to explain the next section because a picture is worth a 1000 words.





In the last picture you can see that i have to use my dremel and cutting wheel to pull a tab of the plate out so the bolt would seat correctly. No biggie.

so all you need is a drill, 3/8ths metal bit, dremel with cutting tool, 10mm/12mm socket, cotter pins, and pliers and you'll be good to go.

going to be ordering the 4bidden shifter once i sell my LEAN short shifter.

i must thank anthony (precisionh23a) once again for being the great guy he is and hooking my up with the 4th gen assembly with advice on how to get them in and not completely throwing me to the wolves.

I can honestly say that you 4th gen guys are lucky. My shifts have never felt this solid before and this is with the stock shifter. It's a much mor solid design IMO.

You'll love a Forbidden SS. Honestly one of the best purchases for my car. It just feels so nice and I'm on the top notch (shortest throw).

Yea, the Forbidden SS was also one of the best investments I made as well.

I run top notch and it feels smooth and precise. Only complaint is the rubbing issue. I keep trimming and it still catches occasionally. (that issue may be even worse with the 5th gen console design)

This gives me hope. There is a guy I know selling shifter and cables from a 4th gen for $50. I am gonna do a manual swap soon in a 5th gen and I am guessing that I can use those parts, is that a good price and do you recommend me doing this for daily driving?

do you mind if i ask if the cables showed any symptoms before they broke? my shifter is feeling weird i can put it in any of the top gears and it has like an inch or 2 of play if you keep pushing it forward and makes me miss gears sometimes

i hadnt seen anyone else put the 4th gen shifter and cabels in, i did it with my wifes 99 lude a few years back cause i stretched her cables out shifting hard and could only find 4th gen repalcement parts.

well, my cables had had their battles in the past and with 140k on them, prolly wasnt a smart idea to mess with full throtle shifting with that kinda mileage. And also, upon first inspecting everything, i notice that my shifter base was a little loose. I have polyurathane bushings and i guess with all vibrations the bolts back out over time.

I've had this shifter and bushings for like 3 years and had never thought to check them out every once in a while to see if they needed to be retightened.
it broke at the point where the cable is mounted to the shifter base which i think means that everything pretty much went wrong

hell yea man. Your really gonna like how solid it feels

my bushings are just polyurethane that Lean gave me when i bought his shifter way back when. I'm sure you can use the stock 4th gen bushings without any problem. When you drill the new hole, you can prolly go to lowes and make your own bushing.

You're gonna love it! I have mine on shortest and it still feels rock solid.

One more thing I wanted to share...
There have been a few guys, including myself, who broke the plastic piece that goes over that ball. Mine just snapped in half as I was trying to get it off the OEM shifter, and I was very gentle too. It's a nasty piece to take off.
In case you break it, don't panic
You can still use it. Just put the two pieces together over the ball and put it back in place as you're installing the 4bidden shifter. They really have nowhere to go. I measured the two pieces and the ball, then measured the opening they go into, and concluded that everything should still work as normal even though the piece is broken in half. And sure enough, a few months later it's still in place and performing just fine.

The Forbidden is awesome. I run mine on the top notch and its nice and short without being notchy. I didn't install poly bushings with mine though, I just bought washers and stacked them up
