Has anyone installed 6.5 Alpines (or other) in the front of a teg?
I bought the top of the line alpine type R components, and the bishs wont fit in the door! Anyone have any special ways of putting them in? or do you cut the door or something?
hmm what do you mean they wont fit in the door.. like thier too deep? either make a spacer out of like 3/4" or 1" MDF so they stick out a little more and clear the door panel/speaker basket.. or try cutting into the basket but make sure they dont interfere w/ the power window when it comes down... you meant they were too deep to fit into the stock speaker panel right? if not please explain...
there is maybe an inch to half inch space between the mounting points on the speakers and the sheet metal of the door when you push the speaker all the way in. The metal that holds the magnet on the speaker, is wide (in diameter) and wont allow the speaker to fit in any more...if you want more info ill tell you
cut the bottom of the speaker basket. If I am understanding you right, that should fix your problem just make sure you have your window down at all times when doing this install to avoid anykind of problem with that.
Or are you saying that you aren't even using the speaker basket and trying to stick the speaker on bare metal?

If the speaker basket is in place, then there is no way in hell the 6.5 fits. So first i choped the back of the speaker basket off. that didnt solve the problem. so then i cut the speaker basket in half. that also didnt do much good. finally, i started eating away at the speaker basket witha grinder from the inside out trying to make it bigger in the internal diameter. and it now some what kind doesnt really fit, and tehre is still like a half inch of space left if I try to insert it using the speaker basket.
Cut a spacer out of mdf to clear the metal. A 3/4 inch piece should work fine. Mount the spacer to the door and then the speaker to the spacer. I had to do this when I put 6.5 Momos in my integra. Good luck.
yea...i was thinking of something like that, except my idea i though plywood would work. Where can I get MFD? Is it only avaliable at audio stores?
You can get a sheet of MDF at any home depot type store for about $20 a sheet. The problem with plywood is that most expand and contract with moisture. You could probably even go to a stereo shop and for about twenty or thirty bucks have them buzz you out a couple spacers. I have done it for a couple customers before. Just make sure you predrill your screw holes otherwise you will split the wood with a screw.
Yeah 6.5's are a fking bich. I had to completely remove the baskets, and use them as a template on some MDF. My first time I only used 1/2in MDF, and there was a big ol gap, and my Momos sounded like shat. Not sure if the 2 dr is different than the 4 dr (I have a 4dr) but my speakers bottom out on the window track. Just this weekend I got some 1in MDF (Home Depot only carries 3/4in, I had to go to a lumber store) and made a new shim. I will install them tonight, I think it should be a tight fit, but it looks like it will work. Make sure you counter sink the screws that you use to mount the shim to the door, this will allow a flush mount of the speaker to the shim. First mount the shim to the door, then screw the speaker to the shim. I will try to take some pictures tonight so you can see what I am talking about. My shim looks like a 2 year old made it because I used a coping saw rather than a power jig saw. If you have power tools it should be pretty easy. Tracking down 1in MDF is a btch.
So what are you going to do about the problem that it looks like it bottoms out into the door jamb? I dont think that ill be able to close my door...and then i dont feel like buying this **** if im not going to use it (MFD, its pretty expensive...). Take a picture of the bottom of the door so that I can see how far your components stick out. Ill try to get to home depot today and cut out a single circle and see how it goes. If it does get in the way of the door, is it ok to shave part of the outer speaker bracket (the one with the mounting holes).
With my old shim, the speaker stuck out about an inch from the metal of the door, but that inch was only 1/2 in of shim, and 1/2 in of air, so it wasn't even close to being sealed against the door. My door panel barely fit back over the speaker, and I had to grind the stock Integra speaker grills to fit back into the door, and around the new speaker. The new shim should place the speaker in the same position, but seal it tight against the door, w/ no air leaks.
So how did you get the doors to close on the car? I put my speaker in and it looked like it hug right down to the door (wouldnt allow it to close).
Not sure why the door wouldn't close? Do you mean it's hard to put the door panel back on? Mine barely went back on. I don't see how the door physically could not close. Do you have a 2dr? It is probably different than my 4dr doors. Dose your speaker hit the side of the dash board or something?
stop by your local stereo shop (best buy even) and buy plastic spacers they are universal fit and should only cost you about $10-$15 dollars. i am a mecp certified installer of almost 5 years and dont think that you should have too much of a problem installing theese components with a spacer and a little bit of creative modification. and your factory speaker cover should fit back on also. good luck!
thanks
now in that pic:
Blue circles: 4 original screws holding speaker cage/baffle to car.
Green circles: 3 wood screws drilled into the plastic speaker cage.
Red Arrows/Line: Bottom of door (presses tight against other parts of car to make an "air tight" close.)
Yellow Arrows/Line: Angled point of door, point at which the speaker (6.5) extends way over too. Probably then blocking me from being able to put the door panel back on.

Even using a 1 in shim I was able to put the door panel back on, but it is a tight fit. I took some pictures last night w/ my roommates camera, but she wont have time to download them until tonight.
in that picture, yes, but thats with my current speaker, its a 5.25, so its got no problem fitting. I just made a CAD drawing for the spacer cut outs, I just need to open up the drives side now and take out the basket to figure out where its holes are for screwing into the car (to match them up).
I got the 3/4 inch stuff from home depot. it was only 4.95 for a 4'x2x'.75".

Yeah thats exactly what I did, sorry i still dont have pictures, waiting for my roomate to download them off her camera. You need to ditch the whole OEM basket and only use your own shim.
Anyone know any good and easy ways to cut out the spaces (a ring of wood)?
Im using a rotozip and that thing is kinda deadly....Anything besides a jig saw that'll work?
Hey Cru, did you get the pics yet?
