Default ITR powered EG goes - KABOOM!

Well, I've been on Honda-tech for awhile now reading over the years and gathering advice on my several Honda's that I've owned. From my ITR to my ITR powered Hatch I've had a lot of help here.

Last year I purchased a '93 Civic hatch to build as an HDPE weekend warrior to track with myself and my friend 96 SOHC VTEC. I finally got it together this spring to start tracking. Although I've had some problems getting it running right I thought I had it figured out. I guess I was wrong. Figured I'd post some pics in here with her few months of glory.

Here's my HPDE setup. 96 sohc vtec's truck, my trailer and car at Roebling.

Me and the hatch

96 Sohc vtec

96 at the wheel

The specs were as follows:

• AEM Cold Air Intake
• Comptech Race Header Jet Hot Coated (Eliminates Cat)
• Mugen Oil Pan
• Skunk2 Stage 1 Cams
• Megan Racing Adjustable Cam Gears
• B&M Fuel Pressure Regulator Gauge
• AEM Fuel Pressure Regulator
• Carbing Oil Catch Can
• Head Milled 20 Thou
• Mugen Headgasket
• Microtech Standalone ECU
• Exedy Organic Clutch
• Exedy Lightweight Flywheel
• Innovative Engine Mounts
• Full 2.5in Exhaust System Routed to Magnaflow Oval Muffler
• CTR Crank Pulley
• NGK Spark Plug Wires
• Hondata Intake Manifold Gasket
• Setrab 19 Row Oil Cooler With Relocation Kit
• Sparco Hood Pins
• Bored Throttle Body 64.5 Tapered to 70
• 12:1 Compression
• Fluidyne Full Length Radiator
• FAL SlimLine Fan
• USDM 4th & 5th Gear (1.107 & 0.848)
• Walbro Fuel Pump
• RC 310 Injectors
• Water Wetter + Distilled Water in Cooling System
• Energy Suspension Shifter Bushings

This setup netted me 200whp.

And now to the good stuff...

96 and I paying a tribute to the JDM B18C

Even the dog came to pay homage.

R.I.P. B18C. I'm thinking of going with a K20 now. HHMM.

I am not quite sure how this happened as of yet. We were conservative with the tuning in the engine and nothing was overlooked. No signs of this happening whatsoever. The guys who help me build this motor can only diagnose over the phone at this point until they look at it personally (i can't tell for sure). I dont want to say what i think it was quite yet until we get the head off but I am 99.9% sure the block is NOT reusable seeing this damage. I have pulled the valve cover and the cams are still in tact so i am leaning towards something giving way in the block. More pictures to follow this post.

This is the first motor I have officially grenaded

Hey guys,

This was at Roebling Road last weekend, and nothing out of the ordinary at the time it happened. Mike said he was going along at around 5,500 rpm's, car pulling hard when BOOM - game over.

Sucks.

I wonder if it got nailed off when the bottomend went.... or if it came loose and was the cause....

i think you guys are right in seeing a piston that had exploded. I am pretty sure what's left of the wrist pin on that particular piston is in my oil pan in the pictures. More to follow once i have a professional who knows for sure how this all happened. I will keep everyone updated.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes . I fear that happening to my engine at the track. Well, sort of. I'd like to go 2.0L .

Wondering if there was anything that would of prevented this from happening? I mostly fear spinning a bearing due to low oil level. I check it religiously throughout the day at the track.
