CA SMOG Legal
First off, I understand the H22 or H23 but why whould you want an F-series motor in your Sol? About smog legality, motor needs to be USDM, same year or newer then chasis of your car, and you need to swap over all of the OBD/emission stuff from the motor to your Sol. That's the basics.
Which means you need to wiring in the EGR!!!
You will loose the A/C and power steering as in there is no room for it.

You can swap a JDM engine but, it must have all of the smog equipment of it's USDM counter part.

spade have you ever passed a jdm engine in Ca with out cash udner the table i mean why do you keep sayign this when eeryone else says it wont pass, i have seen all thewebsites and one my fiar share of searchign all it says is jdm will not pass visual you can pass the pipe but not the visual
My '94 'Sol is '98 'lude powered WITH A/C and it passed the CA ref no problem. The EGR box from a VX bolts to your firewall, BTW and looks much cleaner than a cobbled up POS. Mine smogged as a '95 engine: as long as the engine was in production in an earlier year (still being the same year as your car or newer) you can use emissions equipment from the earlier year (no OBDII for me). We ref alot of our customer's cars and have the dubious honor of dealing with the state refs on a regular basis.
The biggest reason to go for the F-series is cost...actually, the ONLY reason! But beware, even an F is gonna cost max dollar by the time you install it correctly.

some ref will ignore u'r harness seput and some don't so i don't know how u'r **** pass smog or u'r just f@(king w/ us. what i've learned is that if u plug in a lets say... 94 car with a 98+ engine the emission setup has to be 98+.i just can't believe that u'r car pass smog on a ref station

sorry i wasnt very clear on that
a replacement engine on the same car using a jdm motor will pass smog (as a replacement only) but if u plug it in on a civic with a single overcam and changing it over to (modify) dohc and specially a imported ingine will not pass smog

Just a word of advice for other Cali residents; If you plan on doing some none CARB legal mods or swapping a JDM engine then finding some place that can "hook you up", pay close attention to your last smog check. Although I passed 2 years ago, I didn't pass by too much on some of the tests. I was wondering why I got a test-only station notice on my renewal, but when I passed this year on the top of the test results under reason for smog it said: "High emmisions profile" or something to that effect. If you get called to go to a test-only station and you have a JDM motor in your car, or other non-carb certified mods, I think your chance of passing might be pretty slim because you can't just to any place and smog it, it has to be a BAR certified test-only center.
