How did you convince your parents????
Alright.. I know a lot of you have families that care about you and probaly preferred you not having a bike. Most likely you had to do something to convince them not to worry SO MUCH!
My story:
I'm about to turn 22, going to college, and I WANT A BIKE SO BAD... i mean.. so bad it hurts. Everytime I see one on the road... I just wish it was me on it. Not too much experience riding.. I rode my friends ninja around the parking lot.
I asked my mom if I could buy one many times... (I havent yet sat down and had "the talk") and she just says no. My mom threatens me to take me off their health insurance... thats a little odd eh? Both my parents were motorcycle cops and my dad use to have a harley, so I just can't see why they wont allow me to get one.
My idea is when I go visit them on the holiday break... is to sit down with my parents and (have the "talk"), actually try to convince them I am mature enough to own a bike.
Now if you guys could give me some personal experience w/ this that would be great!
Please dont flame b/c...
1.) I'm 100% serious about this.
2.) I'M BUYING IT.. not my parents
3.) Of course I could just buy it w/o their consent.. but I rather have them on my side since they ARE FAMILY!

could be since they were motorcycle cops they saw some pretty horrifying accidents and they imagine that you potentially could be one of those victims one day.
My dad and stepmom always say hell no. but I had the talk with my mom and said im old enough to make my own decisions etc. and she agreed, and she even told me to put everything in her name (insurance, title etc.). This was last summer, only been riding for one year. I love my momma
.
btw im korean too lol. i understand what you mean by our parents not wanting it.

btw dno't do the w/o consent thing. cuz what happens when you get into an accident, a bad one and they have to come to the hospital and find out you lied to them and decieved them and now you're messed up. You would also just prove them right
Thanks guys.. I appreciate it.
^I might just use that one...
^^Yeah.. and also w/ health insurance.. they would say... "so your son had a bike and you never told us".. there goes my hospital bills. I love my Mom too.. thats why I need her damn consent. My dad seems pretty chill about the idea.. havent really gotten a straight opinion out of him.

tell them you wont go on the hughway either that helps a lot. and my mom said what about those guys that do wheeies an stuff, and i said that i thought it was tacky and dumb and she said good answer. you can even have them go shopping with you for gear so they know you have full gear.
There was no way i was getting one while still living under their roof, but i shipped out to college and when i could afford one (at 22 like you) i bought one. Took me about a month to let them know i had it, but they warmed up to it surprisingly fast. Of course they would rather I sell it, but they know how much joy I get out of it, and how paranoid and safe I ride so it appeases them a little.

when i needed transportation, but couldn't afford a car....that was my only option. Tell them you'll take the MSF and always wear proper gear. My parents are cool with it, I ride safe and geared up, and it's been 7 months of smooth fun thus far.

I got mine when i was 21. But my parents are pretty laid back, i had asked them numerous amounts of time and they said no no no. I am on my own insurance, just live under their roof. i pretty much showed up with it home. they just asked me to be careful and to think about my loved ones when riding. I even went to the track with it which scared them even more, but they understand the safety at the race track.
Now i own another bike, still they thought it was a bad idea, but once my dad and mom saw it, they fell in love with the bike.
maybe since you are JUST starting college, you may want to put things on hold, and get your priorities straight first.
ask them what it would take, or when they think it would be appropriate for you to own a bike

I had a same problem too, but i never told my parents. they have no idea that i have a motorcycle sitting on a visitor parking spot. also I will never tell them that i have one because they will worry about me all the time. If you are old enough and have responsibility to take care of insurance fee and stuff, go buy ur own and do ur own thing.. just my 2cents.

I'd been riding for so long off-road, my parents basically knew it was just a matter of time before I bought a street bike.
Mom's Response - "Why didn't you just buy a new dirt bike? And why'd you have to get one of those speed bikes?" ( I laughed at that, it's a ninjette)
Dad's - "Yeah, I used to have something like this in college (He had a 400 something)" He got jealous sitting on it, because my mom won't let him near one.
Mom's response to Dad's - "Yeah, which he used to ride without a helmet. You do that, I'll kill you myself."
And that was the end of that.

i just finished my msf yesterday and am getting my endorsement today, it took some talking but i got my mom to agree to the idea. Just had to compromise a bit. the conditions were that i will not take it out on the highway during traffic times or at night. haha my mom said something to the effect of Goullish's parents. something like if you crash ill revive you and kill you myself. oh yea im korean too

Not only that, think of the repercusions when they get a call from the ER nurse saying you're in for a motorcycle accident, even if it's a minor one.
That's a bad enough phone call as it is (just ask my folks), adding to the surprise just makes in exponentially worse.

are your parents paying for college? there is no real convincing to do in that case. tell them. if they're ok with it, you're good. if not, don't bother.
i'm 24, live on my own... there wasn't much my parents could do other than accept it. it helps that my grandfather was an avid rider and my parents are already comfortable with me tracking my car.

Trust is the big thing. What I did was keeping on building the trust between me and my parents, not that they don't trust me in the first place. I asked them basically everyday. I was already working 40-50 hours a week. With the way gas prices are soaring it really helped. I convinced them enough that I was mature enough and did not have a thing for wheelies racing. It was a mode of transportation from home to school. They know I battle traffic day and night. I'm only 19 what do I know? HAHA I told them I have no intentions for all the squid stuff
Build a trust foundation with them. I'm independent I pay rent and everything and still asked for their permission to purchase and ride a bike.

22 years of age is an adult last time I checked... good luck and remember riding is not for everone, perhaps you will find that your parents are right.
I wanted a bike since I was small and knew my mom would not approve of it so I moved out when I was 18 and in college and got it soon after. She never liked it but there was nothing she could do and she knew it so she just had to accept it. But she does trust me and my decisions since I am the only person in my family that has gone to college, currently have a better paying job than most people in my family, and am the only person that has moved out out of my brothers.
Well I'm 18 and for the last long while I would tell them that I was thinking about buying a bike. My mom would always say a definite no, but my dad used to ride a bike and she used to ride with. My dad said he dosnt really want me to get one, but he cant stop me from getting one.
So one weekend I said im going off to work (overnight) but instead went to Ohio to pick up a bike (700 miles one way, 24 hour round trip) Came back parked it in the back parking lot (apartments) and had it there for about a week. I knew parents would find out eventually and they did.
One day my dad calls me up and hes like "you know your missing 4K$ from your bank account"
"yeah"
"oh... so what did you buy and didnt tell us"
"a bike"
"oh"
"later"
Came home after work, they didnt even really talk about it, then my gear started coming in and mom was critizing it "its textile not leather" lol, she wasnt allright with it, but she knew i'd do it right.
Then in about a week they were like "so when are you going to show us the bike?"
Basically I just took care of everything and did everything in my name MSF (dad didnt want me to take it.. "waste of 300$", tax, insurance, reg etc.. is all in my name.
My dad things I put on too much gear too... which I find strange.
