Default Aftermkt Clutch vs. Stock Clutch lifespan

Driven the same way, would aftermarket performance clutches have a longer lifespan than the stock ITR clutch? Thanks!

It depends on HOW you drive....but the stocker will probably last the longest

My original clutch lasted 27k, replaced under warranty. The replacement lasted 47k, died last week. Both failed when a piece of metal broke off the clutch disc.

I went with an Exedy this time, hoping it will last longer.

Here's what my second clutch disc looked like -- the piece broke off where the arrow points, in between the main disc and higher plate. The first clutch had a piece break off from an outer plate (the high one I think, not sure), again next to a spring.

When that peice broke how did you know? what were the symtoms, sounds, feel, engagement tell me cause i think mine might have a problem too
Well, if search on here didn't suck, I could find the place I already described it...

Anyway, for the one in the picture, on a nice gentle drive, shortly after I left home, it felt strangely grabby and uneven pulling away (gently, not warmed up and in traffic) from a stop. It wasn't grabbing at the same place each time, and when it did grab it would chatter with low frequency. On the same drive, it started balking at shifting. By the end of the day, I realized that above maybe 3000 revs, it acted like the clutch didn't completely disengage: the revs dropped, but the gears only changed when the revs matched. I went directly to the dealer the next day.

The first one that failed also came about on a gentle drive. I had no trouble on the morning commute, then a mile out of the parking lot on the way to lunch it didn't want to go into second, and the pedal felt strange. On the rest of that maybe 6 mile trip, it sometimes shifted okay, sometimes would not disengage at all (very heavy or jammed pedal), and sometimes would refuse to go into gear. At one point I had to roll into a parking lot and stop the car to get into a gear. I called the shop and drove it directly there, almost without using the clutch (30 miles) -- I only used it when I had to stop a couple times, and did all other shifts without it. The faster the car was going, the more balky the clutch was (over 25 mph it didn't work, if I recall). I imagined that the piece would jam something when the assembly was spinning and it was held near the edge by the force; at rest it would loosen and get out of the way (just a guess).

In both cases, the elapsed time from symptoms to repair was under a day.

has a lot to do how you drive , some people put aftermarket clutch for the performance of it . meaning that the car will see more abuse or ruff driving

Was your replacement clutch the original factory clutch, if not what brand and model is it? Cheers!

but with 26000 do you think it could be warrenty-ed ?
Sure -- definitely worth having the dealer look at it (drive it), unless you hate the dealer for some reason.

Yes. It was the warranty replacement put in by the dealer.
