Default K20 swaps? Carb/Smog legal?

For those with K20 swaps, are you guys getting that BAR(?) certification with it to make it smog legal? And how much should I expect to pay for a K20 swap at a reputable shop (So.cal)?

mines not smog legal, cuz i have an 03 k20a type r motor in an 05 coupe.. i paid a lot for my engine.. but i had some friends only charge me 700 to do the swap. so i would think a reputable shop would probably charge u around 1000-1200 to do it. I am trying to find an 05 k24 (tsx) motor that someone would like to trade me.

Yes it can be smog legal if you get an engine that was originally sold in the USDM. CARB has a repair exemption wavier that you can get. K20a won't get past smog etc, but an a2 or k24 will.

I live in texas and around here a full swap with labor and tunning will run you about 7000, But this is by a shop that is considered one of the best in texas.

The engine must be of same year or newer than chassis...

why would a K24 now pass?
its from a TSX/Accord

THe CRV/Element K24's shouldnt, as they are truck/suv motors, but the other's are fine.

I've seen K24's pass smog, so I know it can be done.

So, you got some time to not even worry about it....

Yes, that usually does help.

But, the best way to pass a vehicle is the LEGAL way, we smog K20, B20 and H22 swaps everyday. We're in 2006 now, no more shortcuts. We actually convert the vehicles to CNG/LPG, certify them with the state as flexfuel/CNG, exempt the smogs indefinitely, then uninstall the CNG/LPG conversion kits.

Forget cutting corners, why pay for a crooked smog every 2 years? if you do it right the first time, you won't have to watch your back or stress out about getting referee tickets, or even worry about any future smogs.....

or you could just move to kansas, a friend of mine had an old mr2 that had to be "inspected" because it hadent been regestered in years (came out of a junk yard) but all the guy did was look at the lights and ask if it had a 4 cylinder in it still, didnt even ask to open the hood, i love this shity state

I can do you one better, shevlin, if you live in Wisconsin you can register a vehicle for use up North, and you won't need to take it to get tested or inspected ever.

New mexico They check vin against title. Thats it. No smog or emissions EVER.
And that is only a check when you buy an out of state car. If you buy an in state they open the door make sure same car as the title says.

I love this state but that is only reason why.

This motor will get through emissions testing in Northern Virginia if the installer and tuner know that it's what you will need to be doing. You're only going to lose a few HP...but they need to know that you have to pass emissions when the work is being done the first time, and they need to have a full understanding of the state inspection requirements for your locality.

I have no idea if this would work in the original poster's part of the world, but I wanted to point out that it is not necessarily automatically going to be out of the question.

As long as the motor you are putting in the car, is out of the same year, or newer, you won't have a problem if the motor is as it came from the factory.

k24:

only the accord motor will pass. crv or tsx will not pass.

this is if you want to BAR your car.
