NHRA Cage Specs
I am a Chassis inspector and Chassis builder out here in Utah and I have went directly to the people who set up and print the chassis specs. And welding the d bars to the 6 x 6 is not an acceptable practice!
Here is a Direct quote from the NHRA / SFI Chassis inspectors book.
"D" Bar installation for full bodied cars:
For Front wheel drive cars, with complete oem floor and rooker/sill boxes, the 1-1/4 x .058" CM (.118MS) "D" Bars (when required; i.e. When the main hoop is not welded to the frame) shown in the NHRA Rule Book drawings may be welded to a 1-5/8 x 083" CM (.118"MS) crossmember welded to the rocker/sill box via 6 x 6 x 1/8 plates.
For rear wheel drive cars the "D" bars(when required) must be welded to the sub frame (ie where no subframe exisits one must be installed). Welding the "D" Bars to an OEM floor or tunnel via conventional 6x6 x 1/8 plates or a cross member welded to the rocker/sill box IS NOT permitted.

As per my last post this section of the Chassis book was revised on Jan 31st 2000!
Also from another thread I saw pictures of some A piler bars that had some extreme bends! this will not pass certification if the car was to roll over the apiler bars would colapse because of the extreme bends.
I know of a Civic that was warned at a NHRA event to remove bars that were bent the same way before the next event!

so is it te rule that you have to weld the main hoop to the cross member that is welded to the sill, or can you weld the main hoop to the floor with the plates of course and then weld the cross member in between the main hoop and then weld the d bars to it?

what i gather from that is, if the main hoop is not welded to a frame, in our cases it cant be, the d bars must then be welded to a cross bar welded to the rocker sill.
damn i have already been through this **** when i got my cage done. next year when i go for the chute mount i think i am going to just retrofit the damn thing.

Yes.... What I do with my cars now is bend the 6 x6 plate so the main hoop sits on the plate and then goes up the side of the rocker panel, I then weld the plate to the floor, rocker panel, and main hoop.

if you have the main hoop either boxed to the rocker or welded like the plate you say, then i guess you could weld the crossbar to the main hoop. didnt think about that.

If you would please scan the page out of the book that has the rule in for all of us to see. We just had a car stickered at our shop yesterday and it passed without that bar. The Div 1 tech Director said they are fine that way. This rule is not in a book that is available to any chassis builder or the general public. It is in the NHRA policy book and none of us can see that.

From what i understand, cars that are built the old way already will still pass. I think they want to start transitioning to the new style, but it's going to take some time and some damn published rules before they can enforce it. You can't make a rule and tell a few people about it. I have yet to see documentation of this new rule.

thankyou.
and above. this needs to come to light so it can be transitioned. because mine too passed cert w/o the crossbar.

So why do these threads keep poping up? I posted my car passed fine without the bars, along with many other people on this forum but yet there are atleast two threads a week asking the same thing.

For some reason I think you're full of ****, cause NHRA does not let a chassis builders have anything to do with chassis inspection. Quality Control cannot be done by the person making the part. I'm a chassis builder, and NHRA instantly said NO when I asked about being an inspector just for that reason.

lol funny, but look at the main hoop in his picture shown above. is that mounted to the cross bar to the rocker? i cant see that fly by an inspection, it says that the main hoop has to be welded to a 6x 6 plate to the floor or bolted with 3/8 bolts
Sorry you feel that way! I was just trying to help!
I have tryed to post the page from the manuel but I am having issues with getting it to work. If any one would like I can send a copy to your private email.
As to the spec # these cages that have an issue with the D bars are what is considered NHRA rule book cars, and they can only be certified to 8.50. Any car going quicker that 8.50 then falls into the spec type catorgory and that is FULL CHASSIS cars and this issue with the D bars is mute.
Once again sorry to ruffle any feathers, I thought that with having an inside line being an NHRA Employee and having worked with the main chassis inspectors for over the last several years. That if I posted something that would help all those out there, and keep some from having to do work over again would be of some sort of service but now I see it was a waste of time.

Go to a reputable chassis shop and have them make you a cage. You will be much more happy with the fitment and it will be tailored to you and not some universal kit.
