Default Roll Cage install S&W racecar in front of dash roll bar pics

this is me and my friends first time installing a cage, i read the rules many times and this is what we ended up with. it took about one weekend. Ill be the 1st to say the welds dont look the best but they are strong and for a mig its not too bad. The cage is mild steel. I hope it passes tech! Its not completed yet but you get the idea.

yes im small.

suggestions/comments accepted.

why because i paid 250$ opposed to 3k for someone else to do it? do you think this will pass tech or your saying it looks like complete garbage?

as far as passing tech i noticed you grinding something in one of the pics, where you grinding the welds down?

as far as the rest of the cage, i just cant stand the kits themselves. they fit like **** plain and simple. just my $.02.

there is no grinding of welds at all, i made one mistake on the main hoop and had to move it, the problem is corrected though. i know it doesnt look hardcore but its my 1st one i did and as i said ill take this over a 3k cage any day.

also from a structural stand point that a-pillar dosent seem too safe too me. i would have to think that the bar would buckle uder a roll over. so i guess a 3k cage done by a professional is too much to save your life? i would love to see what that cage would look like after a roll over at 100+mph.

3k for a full cage damn we must be really cheap then we charge no where near that much for one and all of ours are done in moly

i am agreeing with miller on the a pillars. he hee that rhymed. i did a 6 point myself once in a friends car. i commend you for trying it yourself, but i am more than happy paying what i paid for to get my cage dome professionally. the shop that did mine builds race cars all day long and they know the rules, ins and outs and know roll bar geometry. i never second guessed getting my cage done professionally.

but for trying. thats just my oppinion.

dont be so hard on the guy, hey its his first one and i think i give him props for doing it himself, other than that theres alot that couldve went in there to improve it but if it is a premade kit you cant complain on the install...

its not the install of it that i am bashing on, its the kit itself. i just dont see how shitty kits like these can be certified.

i knew people werent going to like it, esp the in front of dash design, but i just hope it passes tech. i think me and my buddy did a good job considering it was our first time. I studied the rules before doing it so the cage meets all the rules, as you can see it passes my arm dead center of my shoulder and elbow like it should. the cross bar is in the right spot, the angles on the rear bars are good. i dont see what the big problem all of you guys have with it....sure its not as pretty as the one you might get done at a chassis shop but im still in school and in order to compete i need a cage so you gotta make do with what you can afford. if it passes tech, it works for me. thanks for those who gave me props.

BTW the D bars are in now as well as the chute setup.

doesnt look all that bad.. the a pillars do look like they could use some more support.

i know of a few guys running S& W cages in their domestics and with good fit and success so far.

ever thing of going with a swing out arm to help you get into the drivers seat?

I would prefer to bend a cage to the car its going in but I will say Ive installed several of the S&W kits and I dont have a big beef with the 6pts. In SRT4s, DSMs and Hondas they actually fit pretty good, just the normal fitting required really. Now the 10pts do leave a little to be desired and you can see what Im talking about in the above pictures. I dont really care for how they want you to attach the forward bars to the halo, you have to do so in a way that obstructs the drivers view. I guess all in all for as cheap as they are its hard to complain. But then again you have remember you're going to spend more money for installation to make everything fitup good so in the end it might work out to be the same as having one custom made.

I think that the front bars can only have a 30 degree bend to them. But I would just double check with NHRA tech department just to be on the safe side.

from the experience that ive been through with my older brothers car you will need a "D-bar" that cannects the main hoop from one side to the other with the d bars connected to that bar that crosses the bottum. i have no pics but im sure you can look up d bar on HT and find the actual post about it. but yeah just from what i know talking to the NHRA cage cert. person.
