hey guys i just finished my catch can and figured id share w/ ht. I work at Lowes so i got all the stuff at discount, but anyone should be able to pick this stuff up at any hardware/home improvement store for around 20 bucks. I used a pvc conduit box, which has a sealed lid, 3, 3/4 inch brass fittings, and about 20 feet of 3/4 inch reinforced sink hose. i found the mount bracket laying around in my garage and doctored it up to suit my needs. heres a rundown of what i did........
<center>

</center>
Here you can see the seal around the top of the lid...
<center>

</center>
I drilled 3 holes and used a reamer to get them just the right size to crank the fittings in...
<center>

</center>
After some vynil paint and the fittings installed....
<center>

</center>
I used some lock washers on the screws for the mount so they wouldnt back out and loosen up.
<center>

</center>
And here it is installed, i still need to get a few more feet of tubing to run a return line to the intake manifold.
<center>

</center>
All in all im very happy with how my little project came out. It took me a couple hours, mostly just waiting for paint to dry. It definatly beats spending 100 bucks plus on something that does the same thing. i like the stealthy look better anyway
let me know what you think! ..... and im thinking of a cool funky sticker to put on top too....

Yea isnt there supposed to be something inside to kinda filter it or something??

i beleive you only need a filter if youre venting the gasses to the atmosphere so that you dont suck in any particles, but im recirculating back into the itm....... the vapors arent that hot, not hot enough to melt pvc and make fumes, and theyll just go right back into the motor anyway, like i said i still need to add one more line back to the itm for vapor return.... i ran out of hose.

instead of having a line going right from the valve cover to the intake tube....and one from the pcv valve to the intake manifold, there is a "can" inbetween. this is because the vaccum slowly pulls tiny amounts of oil through those lines and eventually can gum up your intake tract. the can lets the air pass through, but all the oil falls to the bottom

You sir are an idiot. LMAO

but can't you just stick a mini filter thing on the valve cover, and block the intake hole? i had a intake custom made and had them put no holes in it, (for 93 civic hatch sohc). So its just an intake, then i put a breather filter thing on the hole on the valve cover so the vapors are just released. Or is the catch can so that bad oil can leave the motor?

you can do it that way too, i just ont liek the look of the breather filters, and they tend to get messy after a few thousand miles... you also need to catch the oil from the pcv line to make it even worth doing...

Looks good. Probably the best looking homemade catch can I've seen. But like others have said, it doesn't do anything w/out a filter. Replace your hose with some of that clear braided hose. After a few weeks you'll notice it turning a golden color. I tried fuel filter media. Doesn't work.
You don't have to worry about the PVC getting hot from the vapors.
question: the fittings don't have thread in? Is the plastic soft enough that the fittings thread themselves?
Breather filters fail smog, they're bad for the environment, they clog up quickly, but most of all, they HURT engine performance. You want vacuum going to the valve cover. Oil in the combustion chamber effectively lowers the octane of your gasoline. As the author said, you also want to keep the IM clean. If you've ever seen the inside of an IM, it's pretty nasty. Take it off and flush it out and you get a pretty nice performance boost. The "NA is best" sticker is kind of ironic since this mod benefits forced induction motors much more than NA motors.

i dont understand why a filter is needed... the inlet lines are below the return... i still need a line to go from the 3rd nipple to the itm, oil is heavier than air, i dont think its going to do a 180 mid air and squeeze through a 1/4 inch hole. the fittings just self tapped into the box, i made the hole a little too small so i could whrench em in, the box is 100% air tight, water tested it before i installed. ill see what happens, today im going to get another section on hose to finish it up and after a week or so ill see if theres oil getting through, which i doubt. but if it does ill install a filter element

a breather would defeat the whole purpose of the catch can

now i know what they are for!!!
