Default Best Shift Point?

I was just wondering if there is an optimal shift point that you guys generally use while driveing/racing in the 1/4 mile for example? Assuming you have an afermarket tach that reads accurately when do you all suggest shifting? Oh yeah, and this is referring to stock Type R's or atleast stock ECU and bolton's. I know from looking at several stock or near stock Type R's power drops off after 8K so I basically want to know if it's optimal to go ahead and shift right before the rev limiter or not. And what is the actual Rev limiter set at? My stock tach varies from time to time so I'm not sure what the actual rev limiter is set at.
Thanks for all your insight.
M

It basically depends on available traction. The more traction you have (dry conditions, good tire adhesion, good LSD hookup) I would say shift just before redline. As conditions degrade (cooler, wetter) you will have to adjust the shift point down - otherwise you will just spin your tires and lose time.

You also need to find out where is the "actual redline" of your tach by bumping into the rev limiter a few time in 2nd and 3rd. I've seen R's with redline at 9300 reading on the tach

Nice,
Thanks for all the quick responses. I bump the Rev Limiter on my stock tach at about 8600 indicated. So I have just been shifting at about 8500 like they said above.
Thanks a lot.

I've bumped mine with a 9200 Limiter, indicated as 9200 on the tach. It's just a GSR though

I normaly shift at 8800-8900, drops me into the sweet spot with ITR tranny.

If you want maximum acceleration, upshift before wherever your ITR bumps the limiter.
This is good advice. Basically, if you aim to upshift at redline (8400 RPM), you should be fine.

And - for those who claim 8500 - remember that those revs are rising fast when you've got full throttle. It's very difficult to complete an upshift at a precise RPM point. Aim for 8400, and you might actually shift at 8300 to 8500. Don't push it too close to the limiter.

On my particular car, maximum HP is at a true 7900 RPM. On the car's tach, this is probably an indicated 8400 RPM.
Hmmm... I'm not sure why you mention this, but you don't want to shift at maximum HP. You want to shift where the HP in the lower gear is equal to the HP in the higher gear. In the R, you never reach this point (HP is higher all the way to redline), so your maximum acceleration is achieved by shifting at redline, not any lower.

I would say the highest RPM you have available...

with a stock motor, maybe like 8800 or higher.

Built motor, like 10,500

for maximum speed.

I have a 8400 rpm "pill" in my shift light (hidden in the dash, not on a monster tach ) If the light comes on I have just enough time to shift before I hit the limiter. The stock tach is about useless at high RPMS, mine reads 9100 rpm when the car is @ 8400RPM.
