What went wrong with this turbo? T4T67
last fri. i was at Jeff Evan's shop for a tune. everything seemed to be going fairly smooth with only a few unexpected bugs under the hood. no big deal. so the tunig starts and he makes a few short pulls and makes a few adjustments. we start with just the WG and no BC. its at about 9 lbs and the pulls seem really smooth. some more adjustments are made and at 10 lbs or so it makes 352whp. the BC is then installed and bumped it up to 14lbs. it makes 392whp. the Tq. curve was dropping way off after about 6500 and just seemeed way off. the whp #s were also off especially with somene like jeff doing the tuning. so we make sure there are no boost leaks. everything looked mint. we made a small adjustment to the WG dump so that it was directed away from the comp. housing since i had it way too close. comp. and leak down is perfect on this motor and it has zero smoke out the tailpipe. (BTW its an 85mm GSR motor). so then we turn it up to 17 lbs and the results were not good. the same 392whp again. we were stumped. jeff worked on this car for 7 hours straight. he gave it his best shot. this turbo has seen maybe 200 miles of street use and a bunch of dyno runs.
so jeff and i both agreed the turbo had to be bad. i need to get this unit fixed or looked at asap. i would like to have it retuned may 6th. any help with getting this turbo rebuilt would be awesome.
so here are some pics i took of the turbo apart. alot of oil in the comp. housing. also the shaft feels like it is binding. its funny though it only felt that way once o took the housings off. it seemed to spin free before i took it apart.

Probably just a bad seal in the turbo, causing you to actually send oil vapor into the combustion chamber; leading to poor performance...
hmm, was the binding bad??? i wonder if too much oil pressure got to the center section and caused premature failure of the seals......i hope you get it figured out, if i can help in any way let me know
i'm worried that even with new seals the performance will still be off. is ther any way to test the unit to see if the cfm is correct.
I hope someone can give you a clear answer on whether there is a way to test a turbo.
My car is current experiencing power problems...I was curious whether or not my turbo is the problem. I did the test you did on the motor and as you said the car isn't smoking.
Anyway, good luck....
