Default tranny case question

i was wondering if there is a difference between a ZC tranny case and an Si tranny case. i am specifically wondering if the differential "seating" part of the case is different. reason i ask is since i switched to a ZC case b/c my Si case broke, my final drive rubs the case and the mainshaft bearing.

i have tried the ZC diff and an Si quaife diff and they both rub...

thanks.

I've heard that the bearings may be different size, depending on the year.

(like 40mm vs 38 mm or something like that.)

i'm alomst postive that the the above reply is correct the bearings will be different.why don't you use another si or dx case they are the same.i can postively say that because i recently split aprt 3 trannies to do some shaft swapping and i know for a fact a dx case and an si case are interchangeable.

HF should have different bearings comparing to SI also.

(Previous numbers I mentionde are rsther 40 vs 34 ).

I believe all the cases (HF DX SI ZC) are the same and gears and differentials can be swapped over. The only thing probably, you'll wanna press the bearings out and swap them too.

just an idea... maybe you lost a shim while swapping the innards?

you didn't shim the diff when you did the FD swap.

are you talking about the differential bearings? if so, i should use the specific case's diff bearings on my diff then, right? i am using Si bearings on the diff right now.

i shimmed the diff according to this:

so i gather from this thread that the diff sits too low which sounds like the bearing is not wide enough (so the diff sits a too low). since i am using the Si bearings I need to use an Si case or a DX case. is this right?

I've got a ZC LSD in an 1990 Si case. The bearing sizes are identical - 40x80x18, the eighteen obviously being the bearing width. There are only 2 sizes of diff bearings in the L3 trannies afik - small and large. I've never conducted an investigation like Bone does on what size bearings came in what, and if it's a function of trim level or model year, or both.

How bad is the diff rubbing? I'd also be with bone on the diff shim. Which side of the case is it rubbing - clutch housing or tranny housing? What exactly on the diff is rubbing? Are the bearings new? If you've got worn out bearings, it can rub on the tranny housing side. Take a look at my page, http://tjshondas.20m.com/diff.htm, on the second picture down, see the bits of silver on the hex head bolts? That's from the diff rubbing the original ZC case with bearings that were TOTALLY wasted. I should take a picture of the inside of the case....
Speaking of that, I can measure the inside of the case if you want, I've still got it for parts. Email me and we can get together on exactly what points to measure from.
I suppose if I'd have thought of that before I started typing all of that above, I could have put off the inevitable carpal tunnel that much more.

Enough trambling...
